don't kill me, but I feel the same way. don't get me wrong, I am slightly enthused that the women have won the world cup......but.....it's.....just...womens......football......it....just.....doesn't.....matter....in....big.....scheme......of.....things..
I know what you mean. I tried to follow as many games as I could via internet (I was usually at work) and watch as many as I could. I was subscribed to like 5-7 BigSoccer forums relevant to the WWC and I am so fukcin' happy Germany won against a brilliant Brazil... All in all, I thought it was a great tourney with new revelation (Brazil beating the US to get to the final), conspiracy (Chinese spies), Drama (Hope Solo v Ryan), Disappointment (Sweden) and a final that had no underdog which the team that held together the best, won. A great tournament, no doubt. But now that it's over...it's hardly worth mentioning any more. Had it been the men's WC, I would probably still be drunk
well the reason it seems less important right now should be because it's new to us not because it's women's football. it has every right to become as important
I think it'll be different in 20/30 years. We need more star players, we need professional leagues, etc. It took me a while to get into it but now that I did, I am hooked. A lot of men's soccer is overpaid players underperforming. Not every men's soccer match is exciting, fun and fast. I've seen too many to know how dull they can be. As with everything, people need to get used it. I think women's soccer has a great future.
The WC in Mexico 86 was new to me...and I have been heavily hooked ever since. I have also watched and/or followed most WWC since the competition began not to long ago. But it is not the same for me. I would spend the money to go to S Africa but I would not have gone to China for this. It does have every right to be important and to many it is already. But even in men's sports. Take baseball (MLB) for example...some fans prefer the National League over the American League. Though I am also pretty sure a lot has to do with the sex in the case of WWC vs. WC. This most certainly holds true. During a WC, I know most of the players due to UEFA and CL cups, Copa Libertadores, the domestic leagues I follow and so forth. These players are being followed by fans and the media on a day to day basis. Though I am not sure I would be able to get into a good pro league for women (DFB already has a damn good one) because I cannot keep up with all the men's leagues worldwide now as it is.
I meant the whole game is new with much much less history than the men's world cup. Yes, that was my main point. Exactly. Personally, I can enjoy a women's game as much as a men's game (yes, even if I only got into it since the start of this WC)...that is what I am trying to say. As long as the football is good, it doesn't matter if it's men's or women's. Plus I hope it doesn't become commercialised because that's made the men's game into a soap opera where all they do is hype up certain players and teams and talk about their transfers and other gossip etc etc during matches. It's much better to watch a women's game where the players are anonymous and just playing football. That's also what's great about the men's team right now. They aren't a part of that hyped up group. It's like a bunch of kids playing football on the street.
Of course it is not the same as winning the WC. The men soccer world cup is propably the hardest team title to win in the world. D even though some american football lovers wil propably always deny this.) Even the smallest countries spend so many resources and so much money for this cup, it is worlwide incomparable. It is just unfair for the WWC, a cup that`s not even 20 years old and where most players are only half-profis to be compared to the big marketing machinery that is the mens world cup. But of course both is football and so comparisons are made. But still I didn`t hear anyone say when we became hockey or handball worldchampions :" Well that`s nice but it just isn`t soccer " so give them some slack and just be happy for them as you were for the handball or the hockey teams
Actually, I have heard more Europeans say that the European Championship is much harder. I doubt you would get any Americans denying how hard the World Cup is.
I'm all for feminism and empowerment of women, but that being said... say about 1970s chauvinist pigs what you want, but the 'stache/gold chain/chest hair/wifebeater-shirt combo is hard to top in it's awesome glory.
only europeans who have won an ec but haven`t won a WC yet say that. or else we would be wearing stars for ec`s not wc`s I just hope i am not reviving the debate about the stars again. and believe me I once had the superbowl vs. world cup discussion with an american american football fan. But he was living in europe so he propably is over sensitiv concerning this topic
They sure like to harp on that, don't they? I will partially disagree with this. I don't think you will have that discussion with an American who IS a fan of soccer.
Given that you know about this thread... doesn't this contradict the statement you made directly above? I have heard plenty of people say this as well, btw. Even English (on this very board).
well the discussion was if we should add the ec stars and not if we should replace them. well if you look at the winners of the ec you see that some teams have won the ec that haven`t even made it to the semis in the WC`s or you could take the semi-scientific but not yet quite verifyed approach. The german NT is a tournament team. It depends on the importance of the tournament if they get their an in gear or not. So you can use them as a measurement for tournament importance. We have always qualyfied for a WC and always got past the group stages. You can`t say the same about ec`s ergo WC`S are more important
