Be Careful out there: Report: World Cup fan stabbed at Fan Fest in Rio Update at 8:32 PM RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - A World Cup soccer fan watching a match at the FIFA Fan Fest viewing area on Copacabana beach has been stabbed in the leg during an attempted robbery. The O Globo newspaper reports on its website that Claudia Costa was attacked Saturday by a group that has carried out such assaults of Cup fans. She tells the newspaper that a group of boys tried to take her purse. She screamed for help and one of the boys stabbed her with a box-cutter. Costa was taken to a hospital and received nine stitches before being released. Police say they have no report of the case - and that police don't patrol inside the Fan Fest organized by the city government. Rio's mayor's office didn't immediately reply to an email requesting information.
URGENT!!! I have 4 x tickets to Greece vs Costa Rica tomorrow for sale - face value. I am in Rio. I had planned to go but I just found that I have booked wrong flight dates... absolutely devastated. If there is anyone in Rio right now who wants these tickets, please let me know ASAP. I can meet late tonight.
Just got back froma week in rio! If I can answer any questions glad to try. Metro is free if you have game tickets, but only within 4 hours of the game. I was amazed at how easy it was to get in, and out, after the game. Fan fest is a blast but for any "big" game. Get there early. One recommendation is to go around the side of the fence, sit on the beach, ocean side, and watch the game, great view and you. Can jump in the ocean when you get hot. Safety, just don't be stupid, people from the tour group we used did get pick pocketed during USA Portugal but my sons and I, and most we ran into, had no problems. Beach is lined with kiosks, all have tvs and beer, closer to the fan you are the more crowded, we had to go about a mile down the beach for the. Brazil gameto find good seats 30 minutes before the game. It's a blast, lots and lots of niceople, lots of different countries, definitely different from. Being I the USA, which is half the fun
So I fly tom night from Miami to Salvador to watch the USA vs Belgium game.. Super excited!!! Have with me 4 cat 3 tickets belonging to my friend that is unable to make it of the qf game in rio on the 4th of July .. I will reach rio on the 3rd July from Salvador They are bought through an agent so sadly he wants to recover his cost so considerably above fv, pm me if anybody would care for them .. Cheers
Does anyone know where the US fans are going to be watching the Belgium game on Tuesday? We have to catch a flight right after and it will probably be a little too nuts to watch it at fanfest. Any local bars in the area?? We are staying in leblon
I'm also finishing a week in Rio as well. Still here, actually. Here's what I learned (some of this may have been covered by others in previous posts): 1. Bringing 500 reais in cash from home will easily get you by for a family of four in combination with a credit card for bigger meals and things that are easy to charge. People say that the exchange rate is better at ATMs in Brazil but with reais obtained at home prior to your trip, you can hit the ground running. And you won't lose that much money in the exchange (compared to what you're spending on your whole trip!). 2. Ticket collection at the airport is really smooth. At the machine tap the British flag for English, swipe your credit card that you gave FIFA during the application (assuming your card hasn't expired -- not sure what happens then), and select which game(s) to print. You don't have to print all at once. 3. Definitely buy the plastic ticket covers from http://www.specialistid.com/ item #1845-1402. They will keep your tickets in PERFECT condition. They are scannable at the gate through the plastic. Security didn't give us any trouble about that. They are large and won't fit in a money belt, but they do fit in a front cargo shorts pocket. Hard to sit down, but you can make it work. You can even bring a gallon-size ziplock to put the tickets if you're worried about sweat, but mine survived without. 4. The metro is indeed free on game days. There is an attendant at the turnstile who quickly checks the date on the ticket and then swipes you trough. 5. The metro is safe. People have their phones out, very relaxed. You still have to be aware as in any large city. It can get a little noisy with fans chanting -- more like screaming. We had to switch cars a few times because my kids just didn't like the noise. I suggest you get on the metro three hours before kickoff. Our first game we allowed only two hours and there was a HUGE number of people on the train, walking the bridge to the Maracana, etc. Three hours lead time was much more relaxed. 6. There are enough people around who speak a little English that you can get by without much trouble. I used iTranslate on my iPhone several times and it was really helpful. 7. After the first game we saw, we headed back to the metro soon after the final whistle. Bad idea. Tons of people. Again, with kids it's not ideal. If you're alone and drunk, enjoy yourself. After our second game we waited until security kicked us from our seats, then hung around the concession area a while, then waited near the metro before heading to the platform. By that time we all had seats in the train and most of the rabid fans were long gone. Also wanted to say that the Colombia v Uruguay game was quite lively and the opposing fans respected each other. I never felt like the place was going to boil over. One or two little fights broke out, but were quickly doused by security. 8. The Fan Fest on Copacabana is fun. Decent security but not perfect. Maybe the metal detectors are set for serious weaponry because we walked in with plenty of metal (phones, belts, etc.). 9. The line to buy tickets for the Christ statue shuttle van is near the Fan Fest on the other side of the street in a little trailer behind a metal fence. It is CASH ONLY. I waited 30 minutes, got to the front and had to walk away. We now chose to skip the statue because we don't want to lose half a day going up and down a mountain just to see a big statue and an aerial view. Rather be on the streets with the locals and getting a feel for the neighborhood. 10. Despite all sorts of warnings about safety, Copacabana seems quite safe. I wasn't out at 2:00 am so I can't speak to that. For anyone who has lived in NYC or another big city, your street smarts will serve you well. You just have to be aware as you would at home. For folks coming from suburbs or rural areas, you might be a little intimidated because it's kind of a grungy South American city. Very different from what we have at home. But that's kind of the point, right? To go somewhere new and have an adventure.
We are planning to go to the Gringo Café, Barão Da Torre 240, Ipanema. ( Ipanema/General Osório metro) . They had big watch parties there for all of the previous USA games.
I'll be attending match 58 this Friday at Maracana. From the sounds of it, crowds are quite busy after games, and I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations of where I could watch the Brazil-Colombia match afterwards? Not sure if I'll have time to return to Copacabana, and I imagine the Fanfest will be swarming by this time.
There's zero chance you will get into fan fest for a brazil game unless you are there several hours early! We had the same issue, game, then head back to Copacobana, we just headed to the beach, turned AWAY from fan fest and kept going until we found a kiosk with a table and big TV. Go away from fan fest as the closer you get to it, the more full it is, you won't find a table. We watched a Brazil came, front row table to a big TV probably a mile down the beach from fan-fest. We were NOT alone!
I did the van but just turned up to the booth at Largo do Machado and bought the ticket there. Five minutes later I was on a van and on my way.
According to a post in another thread, later games will be shown at the stadium so you can stick around to watch it there. I will try to do the same to watch Brazil-Colombia at the stadium after watching France-Germany.
If there is no extra time you will easily be back but no chance of getting into the fanfest. Just pick a bar. The whole country will be watching. Rio games are well organsied. Just head for the metro at the end. Queue well run and plenty of trains backed up to take the crowd. There is a stop a short walk from the Copacabana beach. Back home and back at work. Wish I was back in Brazil.
I did hear they were showing Brazil games on the screen at Maracana, but for those "with tickets", not sure what tickets, it may be for the game that just ended. Can't see the logic in emptying the place, then filling it with a different set of ticket holders so you may have a good plan
Flying out to Rio tomorrow for Match 58th until the final!!! To excited, even thou I'm bummed Wondo blew it.
I am looking to trade my two Level 5 tickets for two Level 1 or Level 2 tickets for Germany-France. Willing to pay $100 total extra for the exchange if anyone is willing to sit a bit higher, still be at the match, and make some extra cash.
Mate. Have you been in Level 5 at Maracana? I have been on Level 1, 2, 3 & 5. And 5 was easily the best view, and the most fun. You could see everything on the pitch, the movement off the ball, and the whole crowd. It was excellent. The only reason I would not swap with you is that there are four of us. Otherwise I would have snapped your hand off.
Do you really want to risk receiving fake tickets for your genuine ones? Better to do such a swop of seats after you enter the stadium. It is possible to move around albeit not easy. Level 5 appeared to me to be the cheaper categories as level 3 also goes to the back at least on the side opposite the media desks.
