    Economics create the situation though.

Yes they could simply lower Rojo's price close to zero to get rid of him - but then they still need to replace him in a very expensive market.

There is a tipping point where it is simply better to keep Rojo even though he is crap, because it costs far too much to replace him with someone who might turn out not to even be better than him.

This makes sense to some extent, but then we have guys from the academy who aren't being loaned out this year (yet). That's a cheap replacement, and the player from the academy is worth more in the future than Rojo is currently.

That simply does not apply in this situation though. If there is one position where we have numbers, it's at CB: even if we didn't want to bring in a new CB, we still need to get rid of one or perhaps even 2 regardless.
And furthermore as stated, no one is saying to just give him (or anyone else) away. Rojo was on the market already last summer and there was interest from clubs such as Wolves or Everton, who were ready to take him for anywhere from 15 to 18mil reportedly. And that's when he was coming off a season where did take part and wasn't constantly injured.
It's hard to see the sense in asking more, when he's coming off a season when he was constantly injured and hardly played at all. And as we're seeing, there does not seem to be any offers for the guy.

If you get rid of Rojo and Jones, you're left with Lindelof, Smalling and Bailly. Even if you add Tuanzebe, that's not enough for the season.

Maybe there's some interest in rojo and darmian in other leagues and ed thinks we'll have half a month to take care of those outs once our window closes.

In regards to Longstaff, with United not likely to bring in the starting holding mid we need in this window, he should not be completely cast aside and he's someone we definitely need to keep an eye on him this coming season.
It simply does not make sense and is just too much of a risk for us to shell out anything over 25mil at this stage, given his limited experience. He'll no doubt have a big role in this Newcastle team and provided he stays healthy, should see plenty of time as a starter, thus we'll get to see what he's really about.
And if he confirms the form he's shown in those 9 league games last term, and shows no residual effect of the knee injury he's just recovered from, it will make perfect sense to return for him (even if it means we have to pay a higher fee then).
Can't see that position being solved for us with what we have, barring a major (and unexpected) surprise, so it's something we're going to have to plan for and be ready to address next summer at the latest.

I don't buy the high salaries as a legit barrier to moving on the deadwood.

If we actually had a management structure that correctly identify deadwood and correctly find replacements then it's a simple matter to move the deadwood on. Just pay the difference in salary or lower the price and get the deal done.

The problem is we don't know what we are doing, we don't know who should go or stay, and we don't know who to get in.

So Jones, Smalling, + others stay another year. When they should have been sold years ago.

All the crap guys that should be on the way out just got extensions. Don’t think they are going anywhere, unfortunately.

That whole “Woodward stays behind and doesnt join tour to get transfers done” is a rinse and repeat of the “flying back to get transfers done” of yesteryear.

    Put out the media message and give the impression that the club is really trying, when really Woody be like;

If from the playbook, then to be followed eventually by a giving youth / squad members a chance type message no doubt ....

I think there is a fundamental shift in the market where the cannon fodder clubs no longer rejoice at the prospect of buying Utd branded players, or indeed castoffs from any of the big clubs.

In particular these kinds of players didn't used to be on big money at Utd unless/until they had truly established their credentials.

My understanding is that Rowjoe and Mozzerstafi are on 80-90k per week

There are no clubs who will want to pay that - in the past Arse probably would have unloaded Mozzer back to germany or whatever like so many other Arsenal duds

    This 100%.

Everyone knows we don't attract the best players anymore and that the level of our squad is pretty middling. Combine that with the fact that even our bad players are on wages that would top most other PL clubs. Also, all PL clubs have money now, and there's just no incentive for them to take our scraps when they can look abroad for potentially better, younger players with future sell-on value.

According to reports in Italy, Inter's upcoming bid for Lukaku will be for €60mil, plus 20 in add ons. Combined that comes up to around £71mil.
If the rumor is legit, it's getting close to the 75 United paid for him and I imagine they'll hold out for that amount. The clock meanwhile is still ticking down and if this deal is not concluded by the end of next week, Lukaku will probably stay.

Total amount isnt the only concern in the Lukaku deal. If they still want a 2 year loan plus obligation to buy, then a lot will depend on how much we get up front.

Either way, we cant drag this out because we'll need a replacement in this window. I dont trust Ed to make that happen so this could end up being a debacle.

I don't want us to get a replacement for Lukaku. Move Martial/Sanchez/Rash central and use Greenwood on the wings until we get Sancho.

So in a team that struggles to score and with finishing, you want to get rid of our best finisher and top scorer last season (other than Pogba) and not replace him? You're basically throwing the entire seasons success on Rashford's shoulders at that point.

I also dont understand the play Rash/Martial/Sanchez all central comment. If they're all rotating for a single 9 position, than who is going to play the wing this season?

I doubt we see much of Martial as the 9 except for situations where we play a 4312 formation with two strikers.

Ole likes a fluid front three per the interview. All three have goals in them but we did not see them consistently fluid up front because Lukaku predominantly played there and Rash there too.

With a good preseason and instilling the attacking philosophy, all of them have 20 goals in them a season.

Our scoring rate pretty much matched our xG last season. What we need to do is increase the number and/or quality of chances we're producing, especially if we're consciously moving away from just sticking a big bastard up top.

We're banking on a lot of GA output from Bruno at the moment, and that's assuming we actually sign him. I think Angel Gomes might spot him more than I thought before preseason. Us having intelligence in the 10 and a lot of movement has been a real positive in these past two games, and Angel Miniesta has looked surprisingly sturdy when there's been contact.

If we play Greenwood & AWB on the right we'll have a lot more opps from that side.

Sadly if we don't get Bruno I bet we see a lot of Mata and Lingard as the 10. If so, don't count on the chance creation improving much.
