Reason #157 to vote for every Democrat on the ballot in November. The GOP quietly is trying to roll back the Endangered Species Act. This was a Nixon program, for God's sake. Deciding to protect species from going extinct is one of those things that societies do as they evolve, such as prevent its citizens from starving.

Get these people the hell out of office. There isn't a hint of moderation about them, even the ones who act as if they are responsible and sane will do reactionary crap like this when you're not looking.

Yes. As a permits biologist my job is to create Categorical Exclusions...or reasons to get around National Environmental Policy Act, marine mammal protection act, Fisheries act, or ESA. I usually focus on researchers, University Professor, researchers, or people doing their thesis. They follow the same rules as we do, except they need to go through the paperwork to touch of these animals and get them on board for processing them for whatever they are doing. If they don't have the proper paperwork, and are caught with these animals tagging them or handling them, they're in a heap of trouble. Removing section 4D would eliminate the need for a categorical exclusion memo, thus less people applying.

The bigger imact however is the blurb in the new proposal and which it says to not look at the economic impacts. For (a simple) example if the migration of the right whales northward is directly into the path of a new oil rig, right whales are screwed. The organization putting up the oil rig does not need to consult NOAA OR BOEM to put up the oil rig because that protection clause, which is the heart of the ESA, has been stripped away.
