Only to the people who were actually given a chance to comment. It's like that age-old question, "How many people in the South's Black Belt were opposed to slavery?" The correct answer is probably... "The overwhelming majority of them..."
He superseded the original Lieutenant Colonel Henry Braymore Blake. From the book and movie. You kids! Oh wait.
Why the monument fight may be a winner for republicans afterall. Only 30% of Americans recently polled said they supported the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville https://t.co/bfSjMXSXyG— The Economist (@TheEconomist) August 22, 2017
I understand that if we remove the statues of every historic figure who violated today's codes of conduct, there wouldn't be any statues remaining. But ... Confederate statues are different. As with the Confederate flag, they serve as more than memories of the past. They are rallying cries for current racists. So count me among those 30%. Now, if we had a different President and different national mindset, my answer might change. But such is not the case.
Largely irrelevant. What the polls don't seem to measure is the intensity of feeling on issue. If polling on issues were all that relevant there would be strict gun control in this country.
Well, that's a fair point. Republican positions are generally unpopular in national polls, but they get them advanced because the GOP is more motivated than is the opposition. This issue might be the opposite.
The most negative short biography of Robert E. Lee ever written. http://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2018/10/erik-visits-american-grave-part-337
Why do we let them defend the Confederacy? Cause they're modern Confederates maybe? Our most white nationalist congressman, Steve King Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) visited Austria in August and gave an extensive interview to a far-right publication there in which he spelled out, in clearer and more shocking terms than he ever has before, his white nationalist worldview. The eight-term congressman, up for re-election next month, talked to Caroline Sommerfeld of the Austrian far-right propaganda site Unzensuriert (which means “uncensored” in English). Sommerfeld is a prominent intellectual in Europe’s neo-fascist identitarian movement, which has deep connections to America’s so-called alt-right. https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5bca4851e4b0a8f17eec6001
Only 30% of Americans care because almost half of all Americans live West of the Mississippi and could really give ******** all about the civil war. That 30% is actually 95% of whites in the South. No I don't have a link, it's an educated guess.
What do you call people who dress up in silly costumes and pretend to be Confederate slavers? Georgia State Troopers. (Shamelessly stolen from Emo Philips.)
http://mainebeacon.com/new-state-ballad-honors-20th-maine-despite-pro-confederate-objections/ Some GOP legislators wonder if Maine’s new state song is too hard on the Confederacy. After all there were good Christian men on both sides fighting for states’ rights as they saw them. That, my friends, is some Grade A economic anxiety.
Take them all down. Charlottesville can remove statues of Robert E. Lee and General “Stonewall” Jackson, the Virginia Supreme Court has ruled https://t.co/5YhJYL8viW— CNN (@CNN) April 1, 2021
I have to say that I didn't see this coming 25 yrs ago! Virginia is truly becoming a solid blue and progressive state.
And to make my point perfectly clear on this. I understand that the Civil War (and everything that goes with it) is part of our history. And in history, there is good and not so good both: that is part of the deal. All parts of it, whether good or bad, have to be remembered at least. So, not advocating to have these monuments destroyed completely: they can be kept in a museum or some kind of exhibit. That's really where they belong anyhow...
I think they need a park to put all these Civil War and Jim Crow era status in. Walking paths around with explanatory notes for people to take their kids and show them the truth. Or today’s truth anyway.
I will be honest. I laughed. Then I read the article and I laughed some more. I'll be amazed if the demands are met, but I doubt it, because that'd mean admitting the one thing the Brats of the Confederacy will never do. did u steal the $500k Jefferson Davis chair & then tell United Daughters of the Confederacy the chair will be safe only if the group hangs an Assata Shakur banner outside its headquarters, or else the chair will become a toilet? i'd... like to talk to uhttps://t.co/295RH0YoqW pic.twitter.com/A6RexFPEPY— Christopher Mathias (@letsgomathias) April 6, 2021
