An article in today's local newspaper, Journal News, which is printed by the Dayton Journal Newspaper, asks the question: should the Television market for FC Cincinnati include the Dayton area. FC Cincinnati feels including the Dayton tv market into the Cincinnati market makes FC Cincinnati more likely to get an MLS franchise. Having Dayton market included in Cincinnati market moves teams TV market from 36th in nation to 21st in nation.
I have been a season ticket holder and supporter of the Crew since the beginning so I am staying with the Crew,I live in Middletown, but I hope Cincinnati gets a franchise in MLS. The Dayton area traditionally does support Cincinnati teams. The Reds and Bengals are examples of this. For both teams to exist and do well both had better do a very good job of making fans happy!
I grew up in Dayton and I agree they are 90% Cincinnati fans. This would be big for them. This makes me think of a conversation I had this weekend at the USA v Nicaragua game. The guy next to me was from South West Wisconsin and he said he watches SKC games on his local TV station. Damn SKC must have a great TV deal to reach two states away.
Not as many markets or teams in that part of the country. There was a time when the St. Louis Cardinals, for example, had pretty much all of the Midwest.
Of course, we used to be on TV in Detroit, Indianapolis and multiple providers all over Ohio, but since TW wouldn't have known what an overflow channel was if it poked them in their back, we had to go to PPV options on most providers outside Columbus. Baseball is a different beast. As of when I last looked, only a very small part of the country was in no team's market. North Carolina includes Reds and Nationals territory, IIRC. There's something wrong with the system when a "local" team is a day's drive away and that team isn't on TV. (Columbus is also Pirates territory and not far from Penguins territory.) https://www.milehighhockey.com/2013/9/30/4784384/graphic-new-2013-nhl-divisions-by-tv-coverage-zone We know that FS Ohio would be a terrible option for Cincinnati MLS. Ideally, they go on broadcast TV in Dayton, Cincinnati and northern Kentucky. I'd LOVE to see Crew games on FS Ohio and as many OTA stations across Ohio as possible (similar to the Spectrum/Sinclair deal), but if that won't happen, maybe, just maybe, Spectrum will increase their overflow channel capacity and we can go back on FSO. People across Ohio without Spectrum shouldn't be penalized.
Cincinnati is not getting an MLS team. They no more have a stadium solution than Cleveland. Or St Louis. Or 20 other places. And they never will. So it doesn't matter. Forget it. Much more.interesting to discuss that they just found Robert Gould Shaws sword. The one he carried in his hand up the ramparts of Battery Wagner in front of the 54th Massachusetts. Astonishing find.
No I agree that getting public funding from Cincinnati elected officials is near impossible thanks to previous deals with Reds, Bengals and others. However Newport is a good possibility. I believe Newport might jump at the possibility of becoming major league. After all Newport hasn't had much going on since the gambling, casinos and gangsters left town for Las Vegas! Newport Ky. has a spot available on the river bank with downtown Cincinnati and the Reds ballpark in view and are interested in having the team. Also it should be noted that FC Cincinnati owners are putting up 70% of the funds for the stadium. It would seem that it's plausible that some more investors could be found.
And with that, this thread is closed. I try not to make a habit of closing down discussions simply because they're stupid -- I usually prefer just mocking the hell out of them. But we're not having a thread on a Columbus Crew forum asking Columbus Crew fans if they'll support another team over the Columbus Crew. Take that shit somewhere else.
