    Rapinoe has been my favorite player since the 2011 World Cup. I like her insouciance, style, and fearlessness.

    Her best moment in the 2019 World Cup was one which went almost unnoticed. After the match with Spain -- the U.S.'s toughest victory -- Rapinoe is seen on the television broadcast motioning for an exchange of jerseys with the Spanish right-back, Marta Corredera, who had been charged with guarding her -- and had done a pretty good job of it.

    That illustrated for me the beauty of sports: worthy opponents showing respect for each other.

    We were sitting in the second row, next to Rapinoe, for the second half of that game. It was an absolute war between the two of them, very hard fought. That's the kind of play Rapinoe has loved ever since we saw her play in college. "OK girl, let's mix it up!"
