Still one of my favorite songs (probably because it doesn't get overplayed on all those jurassic rock stations, which I try to stay away from...). Saw them in '73/'74 on their American Band tour. I was checking Wiki about details regarding a distant, fading memory when I came across this: According to rock critic/writer Dave Marsh in his book, The Heart of Rock and Soul, Grand Funk was touring with the British group Humble Pie in early 1973.[4] After one performance, the two groups were drinking in a bar when they began arguing over the merits of British versus American rock. Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer stood up and after bragging about American rock heroes such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley, proudly announced, "We're an American band!" Why can't I ever be in a bar when stuff like this happens?
I should have been clearer. The album version of I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home is still one of my favorites. Shorter versions aren't really worth the time.
The Black Angels - Death Song (2017) This album is so good it has been remaining in my rotation since release... I'd say it's one of the best releases of the last five years but maybe it's recency bias? Still...wow...
Brigadoon Studio Cast Recording (full score); John McGlinn, conductor (1991) Music by Frederick Loewe; Lyric by Alan Jay Lerner With Brent Barrett, Rebecca Luker, Judy Kaye CD: EMI Broadway Angel The show that put Lerner and Loewe on the map back in 1947. The original cast album of Brigadoon is exciting and vibrant, but was made during the days of the 78 RPM disc. Unfortunately, the total recording time of the ten numbers it contained was 33 minutes. Tons of material was missing. This reconstruction features the entire score, including all the dance music for Agnes de Mille's choreography. It runs 79 brilliant minutes! Too many people only know this show from it's lackluster MGM movie version starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, which eviscerated the score and featured leads unable to handle the vocal demands of the songs. This CD is the real thing.
