My knowledge on Fritz Walter is too limited to get a complete picture.
How do these two legends match up ability-wise?
Both were prolific scorers in early career. Both were young captains. Both had long careers. Both became creative geniuses.
But where do the differences lie?

    good comparison

Both were complete players and a true "play maker", true leader of a team
IN overall as playmaker, they both were very similar ! But Cruyff was better in dribbling, faster, a bit better in passing and definitely better in defense

    They don't.

I understand that Walter has a special place in German Football history, but he had little opportunity to show his ability in a competitive environment due to unfortunated circumstances.

then that would mean that JamesBH's statement is incorrect?

just because soem one jumping in and said "they don;t"?

and did you read well my line? NO
I said they are "similar" as attacker/playmaker (effective to the team) but Cruyff were more skillful on balls dribbling and shooting and defending
Did I say they had "same style" ?

For example, one can say Platini and Zico were "similar " in their playmaker role
but it's so different as one said Platini had same style as Zico (NO)
