Off topic, kind of: I actually saw the very first streakers. Regardless of what you might read elsewhere (ie, Wikipedia) the term “streaking” was coined in Spring 1974 at Florida State University. I had just parked in front of Tully gym to work out in the weight room. Two naked guys jog past on the sidewalk. The next day they are front page stories nationally and the term “streakers” is attached to them. Crazy. Carry on.
And to think I was so close to driving up for this one. Oh well I will be there tomorrow night. Go USA.
The real crime was their beanpole of a CB dribbling right up the middle without being challenged by the forwards or mids on the first goal. He literally dribbled in space from their box to our box. Unbelievable. On the second goal our defenders had feet planted in cement as SLC went forward. All told it was a depressing performance.
What an ugly match. Standard zero pressure or purpose possession. And where was the urgency? We're down 2-0 and we bring on Ortuño, who just so happens to be as slow, if not slower, than Yura. Why not bring in Baird and try and pull a goal back? At least I had Crown Burger before the game... Also, what did the team have against Lennon? It seemed like they were actively trying not to pass to him. He'd show for the ball, the defender (Henley?) would look at him and wait for SKC's defense to setup, and then pass the other direction. It was weird.
You know I have not been impressed at all with Henley. He had a number of easy giveaways last night which seems to be a habit with him. It seems like most of the “big” signings are a bust so far. Barry, Henley, Ortuno. Good thing the Monarchs and the draft bailed us out this season so far.
I doubt I will ever choose to waste my time again going to anything involving the open cup. What also makes me sad is that anyone who went to this game as a first-timer because of cheap or free tickets will probably never come to another game.
It was a pretty sad fan-base turnout, too. I don't know what the official attendance was, but it couldn't have been a lot more than half full. I've got a friend who managed to get four tickets to the Audi Club thingamajig at the top of Sections 37, 1 and 2. All four of us are current or former players and coaches and we all follow the team relatively closely, so we were completely out of our element.
