Turkish women’s football needs to get its act together, good God. 0-8 in their home game today against the Dutch. Not a single win in the group against the likes of Estonia, Kosovo, and Slovenia.

    What’s wrong with them?!

Can’t remember if Turkish women’s team were ever good. Don’t expect too much for them.

Yeeeaaahhh.... Turkey is a pot 4 team for a reason. They haven't entered a UEFA qualifying competition (EURO or WWC) ranked higher than 30th until just this year - when they've been ranked 28th. They're 64th in the FIFA rankings. I'm not sure what you expected of them. Especially considering that the 8-0 loss to the Dutch is entirely typical of what Pot 1 teams do to Pot 4 and Pot 5 (and some Pot 3) teams.

It wasn’t a “what is?” question. I know they suck. It was a “why?” Plus, there’s still a decent gap between being seeded #28 and playing like the #40 team, which is where I’d pretty much put them based on the strength (or lack thereof) of this campaign.

I just don’t get how a large, football-crazy country like Turkey can’t atm even produce a women’s team above the level of a Malta or Cyprus. It was just a general question.

Well, men's football and women's football are very different beasts and probably there are countries were women's football is not very much encouraged, if you ever heard about that.

2 most interesting games of this round will be played on Tuesday:

Portugal vs. Finland in group E
Poland vs. Spain in group D

I'm very curious of this young Helmarit team.Anna Signeul work with Scotland made the fundations for team further succes under Shelley Kerr. Now let's see if she can do this again with Finland's youth.

Spain will be favorites comming to Poland but still ....Vilda and La Roja players surely remember a bitter 0-3 pill to swallow during Algrve Cup.
Month ago White-and-Red's team lost to Brazil 3-1 but in this match 10 players from first squad were absent due to injuries (including 3 nominal defenders). This time around Polish backline will be in full strength.

    Lol.

I take your point. And it’s perfectly fine if people here aren’t experts about Turkish women’s football lol.

Even so, if the problem is culture, what about Jordan? It’s a much smaller country and by most accounts significantly more conservative than Turkey, as regressive as Turkey itself is to Western Europeans.

Yet the Jordan women’s team is ranked (albeit only slightly) higher than Turkey.

Iran is ranked only 7 places lower than Turkey, and I don’t think anyone in their right minds would consider them a progressive country on women’s sports - or anything to do with women, really.

Even considering everything else, Turkey is still shockingly bad at the women’s game.

As I said, it’s probably beyond the pay grade of BS posters, but the point is Turkey really can and should be much better than they are. But of course the world doesn’t work based on “oughts”.

your mentioning though, moslem countries that traditionally frown upon women playing sports. What I don't get is why the former communist bloc of eastern europe has fallen in such hard times in woso? (only Russia made it to the top 16 in the last Euros). Obviously their don't have the money to spend like their richer western neighbors, but that didn't stop Croatia from going all the way to the WC finals on the men's side/ And then oddly enough, the richest budgeted female sports club in all of Europe was a basketball team from Russia named UMMC Ekaterinburg with a $10 million budget(Lyon's budget is around $9 mill, though those figures are from a few years ago)

Highly unusual for a women's football match to end with four Red Cards! I wonder what happened on the pitch to justify that.

This match has finished about an hour ago, and I watched it live on Italian TV.

    GROUP B

    Italy 5 - 0 Malta

    Cernoia 27', 37', Sabatino 42', Giugliano 45', Greggi 90'+3'
    RC: Giugliano 71' (ITA)

The match was played under a pouring rain. Italy keep being a little worse than Denmark on goal difference (Danish girls won vs the same opponent by 8-0), but they won 6 games out of 6 so far in these qualifiers and they are now at +6 points and +2 gd to Denmark, who anyway have two games in hand, one of them vs Georgia going to be played in about an hour.

Giugliano was sent off in 2nd half for a strange second YC that I had never seen before (going outside of the pitch to treat an injury without asking permission to the referee). She will miss the next match in April vs Israel, but it shouldn't be a great problem.

In fact, the very good news for Italy in this last year are that it looks like they found that depth that they were missing before: the movement is solid and there are excellent replacements for the missing starting members. Italy lost one of the starting CBs, Cecilia Salvai, just before the World Cup, but she was replaced by Elena Linari who showcased a performance worthy the maximum stage.

After the World Cup, the star of the team Barbara Bonansea fractured her foot and she isn't back yet from that injury (she should be soon).
During this new batch of qualifier matches, Italy lost three other starters to some less serious injuries: Valentina Giacinti before the match vs Georgia and the other starting Center Back (and captain) Sara Gama and the Right Back (and vice-captain) Alia Guagni during the match vs Georgia.

Today's substitutes Fusetti and Boattin played excellent matches and 19 yo Giada Greggi, who was subbed in in second half, scored a goal at her second cap with Senior NT. As I said, this depth is what's giving hope to the whole movement in Italy. :)
