They filed a trademark claim. OMG! @ussoccer is trying to trademark "Dos a Cero"!#ussf #usmnt pic.twitter.com/gOkpYe4Ud6— Massive Scoop (@MassiveScoop) August 11, 2015
while awesome, it'd sure come back to bite you in the ass when you lose 2-0. and it does seem arrogant. zero [obscenity deleted by moderator] the usa way, i suppose.
I already copyrighted it in other forums. Have to look into if they can use my copyright as a trademark.
From the ussf's own website in an article about the origins of Dos a Cero: Now, apparently, the USSF is trying to blatantly steal a fan's intellectual property for its own profit. Trademarks are used to identify the origins of goods or services. The USPTO requires uniqueness for a trademark to be valid. Their PDF on the subject says this. With other work already in commerce, it would seem difficult to show uniqueness.
It certainly did back in 2011 when we went 2-0 on Mexico in the Gold Final during the first half of that game but in the 2nd half it was all Mexico when they banged in 4 on us. This Dos A Cero is getting old, senior players on the USMNT get into that mind set that 2-0 is enough whenever we play Mexico and in some games it is but I would like it if this team would at least score more goals and not sit back after they score two that's what happened to us when we played Brasil in the 09 CC Final. 3-0 is the scoreline we should always be pushing for not 2-0 because with 3-0 even if they score 1 all you have to do is score another and it's 4-1 and the game is still out of there reach. But what do I know it's not like anybody here would actually agree with what I am saying here anyway.
I may have overlooked a game or two here, but a quick analysis shows that we haven't gone up 2-0 in the 1st half and won vs. Mexico since 1995. The two most recent collapses were the 2-2 tie last year and the 2011 Gold Cup final. So yes, for one reason or another going "Dos a Cero" early hasn't worked well for us.
Warning -- contrarian--- I don't know how eligible this kind of thing is to trademark, but I would rather USSF hold it than some dude who might not be a good steward of it.
I guess it could give USSF the right to sue the Mexicans if they beat us 2-0. FMF might have to put a lawyer on the sideline and order the team to kick the ball into their own net in extra time to avoid possible legal entanglements. Karma's a bitch. I suspect if USSF wins this patent, we'll not see another dos-a-cero for many years.
It could just be a defensive trademark that makes it easier to shut down any tasteless shirts others might make? I don't know. I hope they aren't considering actually using it themselves.
This is probably right. Though I did buy a Dos a Cero t-shirt from the official USA soccer online store back in 2009 so they have been selling merchandise with the phrase since at least then.
