He's 32 and soccer player careers are short, he might as well cash in, being a bit part player in the next cycle isn't worth taking a bad contract when he'll be 36 at the next World Cup. Besides he can still play a part, better then being on the bench somewhere not getting max money and not getting a chance with the new manager. Barrios/Lerma should be starting next cycle anyways.

You really bother me sometimes. You complain constantly about how Pekerman doesn't call enough players. Now there's only 2 new players who are going to be added to the squad after the World Cup?

The core of the 2018 team is younger than 2014, so there will be a lot less changes, especially on defense. Most of the changes will happen in the defensive midfield and at the striker positions. Sanchez, Abel, Bacca and Falcao will likely not return for 2022 or will do it in much more limited roles. Other than that, the core of the team will be heading toward their better years during the next cycle:

GK David Ospina 31 August 1988 (age 29)
GK Camilo Vargas 9 March 1989 (age 29)
GK Iván Arboleda 21 April 1996 (age 22)

DF Cristián Zapata 30 September 1986 (age 31)
DF Santiago Arias 13 January 1992 (age 26)
DF Frank Fabra 22 February 1991 (age 27)
DF Óscar Murillo 18 April 1988 (age 30)
DF Yerry Mina 23 September 1994 (age 23)
DF Davinson Sánchez 12 June 1996 (age 21)
DF Johan Mojica 21 August 1991 (age 26)
DF Jeison Murillo 22 May 1992 (age 26)

MF Sebastián Pérez 29 March 1993 (age 25)
MF Gustavo Cuéllar 14 October 1992 (age 25)
MF Víctor Cantillo 15 October 1993 (age 24)
MF Guillermo Celis 8 May 1993 (age 25)
MF Wílmar Barrios 16 October 1993 (age 24)
MF Mateus Uribe 21 March 1991 (age 27)
MF Jefferson Lerma 25 October 1994 (age 23)

MF Edwin Cardona 8 December 1992 (age 25)
MF Juan Cuadrado 26 May 1988 (age 30)
MF James Rodríguez 12 July 1991 (age 26)
MF Juan Fernando Quintero 18 January 1993 (age 25)

FW Luis Muriel 16 April 1991 (age 27)
FW Miguel Borja 26 January 1993 (age 25)
FW José Izquierdo 7 July 1992 (age 25)

As I've said before, I'm not worried about the DM because we have plenty of talent that will for sure take over the roles in those positions. Our defense and attacking midfield look set for another 4 years too, and for better or worse, Ospina still has plenty of years to offer and there are prospects that could offer something in the next qualifiers.

Our main void is going to be upfront, at least based on current form. But it is also possible that in a year or two, Cucho or Mejia or Morelos (from Rangers) will blossom into a scoring threat.

    Goal keeper
    #9

Are the two most important positions

Hopefully someone better then Ospina in the next 4 years appears. We have a few prospects but omg we can’t have someone as Trash as Vargas on our NT for 8 years.

#9 we need someone who can replace Falcao which won’t be easy.

We have prospects under 23 that I really like, Borre, Cucho, Etc.

We also have starters in big euro leagues but they just don’t score enough. Córdoba, Muriel, Duvan are all 26+ can’t consider them prospects any more.

Borja is the brightest option but he is a streaky striker and isn’t in Europe. His career other then that 1 magical year has been less then great.

Looking at those ages we should be in really good shape for the next cycle and World Cup with a ton of our core players in their peak years. Having all these players playing and suffering/working together should have major benefits, striker as well with Roger Martinez, Cucho, Borja, Muriel, Duvan we have a good enough core to hope that of the younger 3 we could find one who really takes off and claims the position and if not we can pick who's on form with Bacca and Falcao probably still available for the first half of the cycle at least. Having so many guys in so many positions that should be hitting their peak the competition should be fierce for roles on the team, that can only help us.

I have a lot of hope for Borja, Roger and Cucho developing over the next 4 years, all 3 have a lot of tools to work with hopefully Falcao can be around to help them progress and they can learn from a master in the box.

Colombian soccer is in a great place right now and hopefully we can make good on 2018 or 2022 when we have a golden generation.

If Ospina gets consistent play time and/or Arboleda develop into a reliable keeper, we're set.

Of all those names, probably Cucho is our biggest hope. Roger is a question mark but based on his last game, he could get there.

Borja seems to be in line to inherit the position and IMHO he's a heck of a player but lacks the clinical finish. If he developed a little more accuracy, he'd be pursued by a lot of European teams.

Borre is a disappointment so far but he's still young. Muriel and Duvan will probably play some role but hopefully not as primary target. Cordoba is fading quickly.

"Ojo", you guys are throwing away Falcao as a gonner for the next WC. Dont be so sure. Many DT feel it's a pragmatic decision to keep an OG like Falcao on that roster to not only to compete but to help the up and comers integrate.

If Falcao is playing/participating well into WCQ 2020 for Colombia, barring (more)major injury, he may still compete for a spot to be called up for 2022. Why wouldnt he if he's actually scoring/performing vs any of the younger up and comers? This guy has incredible ambition and I just dont see him 'going away'.

This is specially the case with the likes of a DT like Osorio who doesnt mind carrying some older players on his WC roster (ex Mexico: striker Peralta is 34, Rafa Marquez is 39 and GKs are all 32+). Even Pekerman has shown a soft heart for his players regardless of age (Abel, Yepes, Mondragon) as long as they perform to his ask.

We all know there is a fine line and a good DT has to be in charge of making the right decision for the team. This is where the Bolillo/Maturana/Pinto era was so frustrating as they constantly insisted on players beyond their prime (young or old).

CZD is going to have plenty of material to spew about for 4 years.

Look not saying no Falcao but Falcao as our main attacking option would be bad

The younger guys need to step up

I'd be really surprised if Falcao was on a roster for the 2020 World Cup. I think he'd have a very good chance at some role in the next two years and I could see him being a decent option off the bench if we need a goal. That said in his position and with his build (not a big guy like a Zlatan) and his athleticism its going to be really hard for him to compete at the highest level going forward, his hold up play and ability to dribble is already really suspect but his finishing is world class.

Most 9's who can keep going that late into their career have elite athleticism to start with or are big physical guys who rely on strength and hold up play, so when it drops off they are still either tall and physical or have a cushion to come back down to earth athletically. Falcao can still finish but he doesn't have athletic gifts to fall back on, and its already becoming more and more apparent in his play that will only get worse as he ages. For a year or two he can probably contribute but I'd not count on anything past that, which if we want to be a serious contender is natural, we need to rely on the next players and not fall in love with past hero's like we have in the past.

River Plate possibly interested in Cristian Mafla (Atl. Nacional). Marcelo Saracchi their starting full back will be leaving to Red Bull Leipzig very soon for somewhere around 10-20m I think. Can't remember the exact number

So this must assume that they sell at least 1-2 of their 5 foreign players during the same transfer window?

If Pochetino leaves for Madrid as rumored, at least 3 or 4 big names will go with him... Apparently the negotiations went cold during the weekend...
