If Napoli had lost , I was hoping Spalletti would grant Totti a start in his last home game next week ....now that they won though, I doubt that will happen.
For people still hoping Totti will renew, Monchi confirmed again that this is his last match as a footballer.
I really don't understand why the club keeps talking about it when it just makes them look bad. All this is sending as a message is that we re forcing Totti out the door. Shut up and let the man make his own decision
This whole Totti will he/won't he retire thing is beginning feel a whole lot like the Brett Favre retirement saga.
Totti definitely should have spoken up more and said what I think he wants, which is to keep playing. Although who knows what happens behind closed doors. We probably don't know even half of the story.
I honestly don't understand why Totti has been silent despite all this talk. It implies that he doesn't want to quit, but I think it would be best for him if he calls it a day now. Whoever the coach is, I don't see him playing a very important part. Perhaps 20-30 minutes here or there at most, but would that be the real Totti that we all remember? Hell no, not even close. It's time IMO.
I don't think he really has a problem with that though. I feel any other coach would give him a better and more fair and more respectable shot.
I don't necessarily think Totti needed to comment on his situation. Tim Duncan, one of the greatest and most successful basketball players of all time retired last summer with not a single speckle of fanfare. But I don't think the club should have said anything if Totti didn't. Though I guess it worked out since BEIN will be showing the game live now
not sure if anything's "lost in translation", but it sure sounds like he's ready to keep playing. the biggest thing i see is his use of words in the first sentence. him stating "the last time i CAN wear roma's jersey" and not "the last time i WILL wear roma's jersey" makes it sound like he wants to keep wearing it and isn't being allowed to. the rest of the statement seems to confirm that he intends to continue playing elsewhere to fuel his love for football... time will tell i guess!
Aside from that, he may be too old to play anywhere else. I don't know many top level team in the world who would start a 41 year old forward. I saw Roger Milla score a goal at WC 1994 at 42 but I can't remember anyone else. .
He won't be playing top level. He loves South Beach Miami. He'll go there for a year and hang out with Nesta and the boys. Yes, he'll still be "playing" but more importantly he'll be living the high life for a bit. His choice and a nice one. I'll drive down and see him play.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There are no winners or losers in this situation but if we're being honest about what's best for the club going forward, it's time. As painful as that might be to admit.
He doesn't have to play for a top team but can still stay in a top league. You honestly think at team like Sampdoria wouldn't take him? He'd probably even start there or at least touch half of every game.
