Then he'll leave the club as soon as he wins something, he'll say he cannot take the club further and the next manager will have an aging core of players to replace. I used to think after every summer that Spurs refused to back Poch in the transfer market that they were playing Russian roulette. But that was just Russian roulette with one round in the revolver. This is like playing with 5 of the 6 cylinders filled. I can't get the over the fact that the world's most frugal chairman just hired the world's least frugal manager.
This will take some getting used to. It would be nice to win something, though. My son's prediction is FA Cup this year, then he leaves the club in worse shape than before. I can see it playing out that way.
Winning will solve everything, sure, but right now I'm in denial. No idea how Levy and Mourinho will be able to work together.
I read a piece that said Levy has wanted Mourinho ever since he was at Porto and has tried to get him before.
I rather like that analogy. the risk/reward of Mourinho is off the charts. We're really rolling the dice here. It's hardly shocking, though, as he's done it before - and Harry turned out pretty well for us. The difference is that Spurs, for Harry, was the biggest club he was ever likely to manage, which was presumably incentive for him to adjust to frugality. For Jose, it's just the opposite.* *not that Chelsea are a bigger club than Spurs in any meaningful way, mind you, but Jose had a blank check there, for sure.
A mostly disheartening article. The authors try to paint a “both sides” narrative, but unsurprisingly the weight of blame falls squarely on Levy’s shoulders. Though it may be a case of “careful what you wish for” the hint ENIC might be looking to sell is intriguing. Could be a perfect fit for AEG who were rumored to want to buy Spurs a few years back. They want venues in London and want an NFL team. Tottenham are ready-made for both. https://www.espn.com/soccer/tottenh...ed-pochettino-inside-tottenhams-turbulent-day
Gutted for Poch, I miss him already What does a Mourinho team look like nowadays from our current squad? Go back to his first Chelsea team - a highly athletic, pacy team playing 4-3-3; Robben and Duff (Son and Moura, or Eriksen playing the Joe Cole style) flying up and down the wing off Drogba (Kane), with goals from midfield either from distance or late arrival in the box in Lampard (Dele), Michael Essien dominating midfield both defensively and offensively (Ndombele, Sissoko?) and the quite brilliant Makalele providing a platform (Winks) in front of a solid back 4. Not in the slightest saying any or all of the players are similar either in style or ability, just that there is history (albeit ancient, 15 years!) of playing in a fashion which would suit our squad. Or the Man Utd version, a turgid overly-rigid 4-5-1 playing slow football designed to stifle the opposition into submission. Son as auxiliary left back, Dele Alli stationed in a weird Juan Mata-esque wide right anyone? Anyway, i'm an optimist. Here's hoping at least the back 4 gets a bit of work on it.
So it begins... The Mourinho Era at Spurs. Not first choice, and while I liked the disruption he brought to the league, SAF & Wenger, the us vs the world etc. eventually his antics became annoying and he lost it. He couldn’t do squat with Man U so I’m not really sure how it’s going to work with Levy. But if the guy can get us winning and more specifically...winning silverware something Poch came up short on several occasions then maybe it can be stomached. Poch was clearly not interested anymore, it showed in the lack of team mentality, the results going back to before CLF and who is going to walk away from a contract payday? He knew he would be fired and why wait and let a bad situation fester. Nobody should be surprised or outraged that this played out how it did. Poch knew what he got into, perhaps he expected more support from Levy and didn’t get it, we may never know. It was obvious he was already checked out ahead of time. Thanks for a thrilling 5 years and best of luck. Onward and upward, COYS!
Quoted for emphatic agreement... why oh why bring in the only one who is vocally certain he is truly the only special one? Egad... Ibrahimovic is available, also...
I'm in serious cognitive dissonance about my fandom right now. I despise and disrespect Mourinho. I believe him to be the most toxically narcissistic manager in the game. Spurs culture seems a far cry from him. Just... no... I'd honestly rather have kept Poch and be relegated to Championship.
For me, it all comes down to Levy, regardless of the manager/coach. And for the first time, one has to question his financial acumen. Sacking Poch and his staff is costing the club £19 million and Mourinho is earning almost double Poch's annual stipend. Not to mention that Eriksen, Alderweireld and Vertonghen can all leave on free transfers. And he has still to sign a naming rights deal for the stadium. Ultimately, Daniel Levy will do what is best for Daniel Levy as his £6 million pound a year salary would attest.
Wow, have I really been in a dark hole here. Didn't know the change happened (and it is more about my job than the Impeachment thingy).
I said to colleagues at my office the other day: I have enough toxic narcissism in my political news, I don't need it in one of my favorite entertainments. Egad, I scored 50%... I scored guessing.
Watching Sheffield v Man U and it’s looking like Daniel Levy has managed to find a way to trade Mourinho for Pochettino and pay for the “privilege”.
It’s the Mail so … you know, but I wonder if Arsenal allegedly being in talks with Mourinho accelerated Poch’s dismissal?
