http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id...ing-major-threat-nfl-pop-warner-colleges-espn Article about football teams (youth, college, NFL) not being able to get insurance due to CTE concerns. I post it hear because the article mentions both hockey and soccer are also seeing difficulties.
Introducing Zulily, the Official Jersey Partner of Sounders FC https://www.soundersfc.com/post/2019/01/17/introducing-zulily-official-jersey-partner-sounders-fc
I'd be more accepting of it if it didn't use that scripty font, just looks out of place on a jersey to me.
Apparently today's announcement with the Sounders was also an announcement of rebranding for the company. Logos will be updated to the one on the jersey now.
Agreed. This absolutely is something to pay attention to. The fear will not only impact youth sports from direct costs, but indirect costs. Schools, parks and private property owners that allow teams to practice and play games are all increasingly concerned about risk. I hadn't realized insurance got so bad for youth football, but it really should be that much of a surprise. I expect legislation battle is going on behind the scenes with trial lawyers on one side and a host people (NFL, NHL, NBA, NCAA, Pop Warner, Little league, MLS, USYS, AYSO) on the other.
After years of using the Big Tobacco strategy of denying there was a connection between concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the NFL has finally admitted that there is a link. There's now many studies that show the extent of the problem and lawsuits are being filed using this data. The NFL will survive but the real danger to football is parents not letting their kids play. And no amount of legislation will make the sport safer.
Not sure you are getting the point of the article. If there is no insurance, parents won't have a choice in the matter. It doesn't matter whether they or anyone else thinks about relative safety if there is no way to play. Furthermore, the reason it was added is it doesn't just impact football, but all sports. Fear of litigation costs drives the way organizations operate. From my experience the most powerful people an organization are the lawyers. Some corporations will fight everything and brag how much more it costs them to litigate than to settle while others will settle all nuisance cases and avoid anything that might bring them on. So for youth sports, the result is lets be safe not allow any contact sports on our facilities where there can be head injuries. What is true or not does matter. Nor does the true relative risk matter. All that matters is what the courts will allow and how easy it is to convince a particular jury. There will need to be safe haven legislation.
