I was just doing a little house cleaning and figured that I should consolidate the old Resources Thread before you had to search through a bunch of pages to find the link you want.

Not a lot of soccer-just the penalty kick study that's been talked about here. But it's good to see the various methodology used-might provide insight re: how to use metrics in soccer.

Math terms got you confused? Want to be even more confused?

    Reference sources:
Wolfram Research's Mathworld (from the makers of Mathematica software)

For an easier to read source, look up the term in any encyclopedia, a decent free one is found at www.wikipedia.org.

    Soccer TV Ratings

Baseball Prospectus is of course the mothership of this line of thinking and study, closely affiliated with Bill James.

Baseball Primer Another industry standard on par with Baseball Prospectus.

Football Outsiders The 'other' football, great site with really thought out and researched stats on American Football. They've also been very good to us here on Bigsoccer and were nice enough to link us from their site.

Alleyoop.com Basketball metric site which has developed a very interesting Player Efficiency Rating, something I think could be mirrored in soccer if we ever had access to the same kind of stats they do in basketball, such as turnovers etc etc.

82games.com Another basketball metric site, featuring the 'Ronald rating' similar to hockey's +/- stat.

Puckerings.com Hockey metrics site which desirves great mention because of the similarities between the game of hockey and soccer. Not as polished as the other sites listed but is a defanite kindred spirit in that the creator of the site is likewise dealing with the mother of all niches. Here he talks about the thought process of stats in hockey and the differences between the game and baseball.* I would consider this article a must read because it does a great job of breaking down sabermetric type thinking for the uninitiated, including some basic mathmatical definitions.

I am starting a project that I call The Soccer Database Project. Here's a link:
    http://www.phoenixv.dk/soccer/

It intends to convert the information from the RSSSF match logs into searchable databases. This should vastly improve the possibilites for extensive research with large sample sizes.

There are already a couple of databases available containing a significant amount of data. Check it out and let me know if you have any suggestions!

Any sources of MLS referee stats available? I know the stats are up with the preview so presumably they are compiled somewhere. Previews disappear on Mlsnet.com come gametime.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Guys,

Please add www.thefootballreview.co.uk to the list. We are hoping to do for football what football outsiders and Baseball prospectus have done for American football and Baseball

I have just put together a spreadsheet to help me keep track of the World Cup 2010 European Qualifying matches:

    http://cid-b6212155f8f699d3.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Files 4 U/World Cup European Qualifiers.xls

The top team in each of the 9 groups automatically go through, but the playoff places are for the 8 next best teams in all 9 groups, not including the 6th placed team in groups 1-8 (which have 6 teams, unlike group 9 with only 5). This is decided on total points and presumably goal difference in the case of a tie. It would seem that to be the second best team in group 9 would be a great disadvantage since you would have played two less games than teams in group 1-8..

Try out my spreadsheet and see what you think.

    Hi Kalpurush.

Thanks for the comment. Yes the spreadsheet is protected, not for any reasons of ownership protection, but just to make sure that the formulas are not chaged by accident making the spreadsheet difficult to put right again for those who are unfamiliar with Excel. I will put an unprotected version on my webpage if you would like to play around with it:

Where can I find a site that is good for showing passes attempted and passes completed (among other things) and hopefully even tackles won or passes intercepted in the Premiership?

I had a great site a while ago that was up to date and trustworthy where you could compare two players side by side, but I have lost the link now.

Would appreciate help if anyone knows of the site.

Are there any print resources for the most basic of team facts? I'm not talking about yearly summaries, or fancy stuff like passes vs. passes completed; just a yearly breakdown of all the players who appeared for each team, how many appearances and how many goals? A match record would be nice, too. I need this data not just for the past decade, which seems to be around the web (though never in a very usable format), but for ALL TIME.

I'm particularly interested in Tottenham Hotspur. I'd like to see something official-ish; I'm aware of topspurs.com, but the accuracy is letting me down -- there are numerous matches where the number of goalscorers is higher or lower than the total score, and the sums of, for instance, Jimmy Greaves's goals doesn't add correctly to his published lifetime total.

Are there accurate team- or league- produced yearbooks or encyclopedias in print? By "in print" I mean "ever printed" not "in print today".

I CANNOT BELIEVE there is no basic resource like this for football -- there should be a soccer-reference.com like baseball-reference.com, where you can easily click between teams, players, years, etc. There's been a print baseball encyclopedia since 1969; why not soccer? Why is it impossible to find out how many games Alan Gilzean played for Tottenham in 69-70? This is SO BASIC. It's as if football doesn't care about its history.

Mr Hanki, just FYI -- Jhon Kennedy Hurtado of the Seattle Sounders is wearing number 34, not 19. I don't know why the change, but I'm pretty sure he's been in 34 for every game.

If you're looking for tabulated team data from the current MLS and EPL seasons, check out my blog: http://nordeckeluchador.blogspot.com/

You'll be able to download an Excel file with up to date stats like total shots, shots on goal, etc. I update the files every week, usually Sunday night after the weekend games are all in.

After much debate and frustration I decided to make my own website for listed and compiled stats on Real Madrid players.

I have been looking for years for a site that had proper compiled and listed stats for the Real Madrid team to no avail and if you look how realmadrid.com shows their stats its pretty frustrating.

So I went ahead, despite having no knowledge (which is evident) on what I was doing and made my own website.

    Real Madrid Statistics

    Currently 3 pages are available

    La Liga Stats
    Champions League Stats
    Overall Statistics

Copa del Rey will be added when played - Still debating whether I should add this to the overall stats page.

Looking to add in the future:

International follow up, listing players who played international fixtures goals and assists.

    Polls on the first page

    About Us page

    Comments discussion page

Asthetics worked on - Alignment, better looking etc etc

    --------------------------

Taken ages to get to this point so give me time and all the little things will be ironed out

At least the information is available for you to see and use :)

If you guys want I can let you know here or anywhere else you would like this thread every time I update?

If not I'm happy to go away as well :p

Sorry for the intrusion hope you like the site Real Madrid Statistics
