We all know of why Petr Cech wears his now-trademark rugby helmet, but, in this day and age of "concussion protocols" in sports worldwide and not just here in America, I want to see either the FA or UEFA or even FIFA introduce an initiative mandating that all goalkeepers at every level of play from the youth programs right on through to the professional ranks wear protective helmets during competition, including friendlies. What do you guys think of what I call "The Petr Cech Initiative"? It will reduce concussions and/or worse especially on 50/50 balls and other challenges involving goalkeepers. Hockey goaltenders are already mandated to have head and facial protection, why not football goalkeepers???
I see your point but for all we know they might've happened in leagues somewhere out there that do not get as much football media attention as the 'Big Four' leagues in Europe or the MLS or Liga MX. It doesn't mean that these things don't happen elsewhere, they just don't get reported on as much as Petr Cech's injury did..
Every single match is interrupted (multiple times in most cases) by outfield players clashing heads - could be avoided if they wore the Cech helmet. Just sayin'
Concussions are way more of an issue with field players vs goalies. Goalies are seldom in position to take head shots. They are actually far more likely to deal them out when punching the ball. You could make the case for youth field players to wear them to avoid head injuries but you will likely never get it passed for pro leagues. Attempting to compare to other sports is pointless... Hockey - has a requirement due to the use of a hard rubber puck that can break bone due to the velocity when they are shot. American Football - far more violent sport where it is incredible uncommon for a player to not get hit in the head during the course of the game.
