Bobby BoswellVerified account @bobbyboswell 7h7 hours ago Earnie Stewart has only been the General Manager of the USMNT for about a week & we have already qualified for the World Cup in 2026. #Progress
I was listening to Earnie Stewart being interviewed by TT and I could see he got the whole 'dual national' stupidity. At least that gives me faith. He seems impatient to get to the real questions of the day and get past the tangential stuff.
I think I remember reading Bobby retired to Texas which means he is likely keeping tabs on his former team which means he is cracking lots of jokes...Or drinking like the rest of us. Whatever it takes.
With Stewart set to officially resume his duties as GM in less than a week, I wanted to bump this thread. Lot to get done ASAP.
I just hope he does a better job than he did with Philly. also, i'm really curious to see if he is the one doing the player selection for rosters or will it be whatever coach is in there and how that impacts which coach accepts the job...(i hope it is the coach b/c I dont see many good coaches accepting not being able to pick their players)
And something else that kind of bugs me. I realized that Sarachan and his assistants signed contract extensions through the end of 2018, so even if we hire a new coach, he's not going to take over until January of 2019. Doesn't leave a whole lot of team to prepare for the Gold Cup.
no they said in the press release for those extensions that they won't stop a new coach from taking over before the end of 2018....(even though, clearly, they make that less likely)
Stewart won't have the problem of a broke-ass owner like he does with the Union so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Ever since Eddie Robinson was hired as the Assistant Coach of the Dash, he has slotted in for some games, yeah. Not bad so far.
When you inherit a 5 alarm out of control raging dumpster fire..........the rebuild takes a lot longer then most would like: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...-hopes-he-leaves-union-better-path-years-come This gives a better idea of what he inherited, and how he tackled it. I realize a lot of the Union fanbase will disagree, but IMO he's built a solid foundation for the team going forward to build upon. Hopefully they make another good hire for their Sporting Director.
Yeah, I have to agree. Decent youth system, a couple bargain signings here and there. Draft picks are at least minimally competent. If Accam and Sapong didn't decide to suck this season they'd be halfway decent.
It was my understanding from a lot of the interviews and outlines back when Earnie was announced, that he would not be selecting players but would be calling them to let them know they are being called up, and staying in contact. In addition, he would be implementing meal schedules and working with the coach as a defacto assistant in being a sounding board for training and such. I'm really interested to see how or if he will effect the scouting side of things.
Forget about what he did for the team playing, check out how he inspired PRO to beat Union opponents. If he can do that at the FIFA level, we are going to win it all!!!
The Union's owner is poor, but the team's salary budget is far from the lowest in MLS. And when it comes down to it, what does having a low-medium budget mean? It means the team can't sign as talented players as the rest of the league. Now consider the USMNT. It too does not have as talented players as much of the world. Basically the same situation the Union is in. Ultimately no difference. Earnie did an average job at signing players on his limited budget: some hits and some very expensive misses. As I posted earlier he either did not have the authority to hire the head coach or was pleased with Curtin's performance (including the worst non-winning streak in team history). He had his GM position for most of a World Cup cycle and the team's performance was no better or worse than before he got the job. And while the Union's youth program is apparently doing well, it is not at all clear that it is significantly better than the rest of the league. So I'm not holding my breath that Earnie will magically fix things. His time at the Union brought him down to earth in my eyes.
Day 1 of Stewart's tenure. Here's a short piece from Jonathan Tannenwald over at the Philly Inquirer website about Earnie's hopes for the position: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports...berhalter-20180801.html?__vfz=medium=sharebar
