Goodsport’s on top of it. Probably the keeper Mario Vega.

Probably nothing major since they are not making a big deal of it.

River Plate is the new AIK.

River Plate was 6-7 years ago. It looks like we're signing an older, second division player from the US.

And, yet, undoubtedly, it was River Plate on his resume that earned him the job (assuming it's Vega). Not to mention, he's likely to be twice as good as Tarbell.

How old is Nick Rimano, by the way? Always enjoy taunting him with AARP chants during warmups when RSL visits.

He had to play three seasons in the NASL before being discovered by an MLS team? And the three years before that he only managed 15 games in three years playing in Cyprus? Color me unimpressed.

It's not really a discovery. He and Almeyda were teammates.

Boring. It’s more of the problem of yeah, some roster turnover but nothing that really looks like it’ll really matter.

If the Mario Vega rumor is true... Is a 34 year old backup goalkeeper from USL (before that NPSL, NASL, and Cyprus) really going to be taking up a precious international roster slot?

My point is, no other team felt he was good enough to bite on. Almeyda and he were teammates 6-7 years ago, has he been following his career since then? While Almeyda was having success in Argentina with Banfield it appears Vega was a back-up keeper in the mighty Cypriot league.

Are we talking about Tim Melia in Kansas City?

Melia worked his way up from a lower league, not an abnormal track, whereas it can be argued that Vega went from playing at higher level, (River Plate) down to a lower level. And even at River Plate he only had 76 games in 6 years, so, pretty much just a back up there.

Let's wait and see how Vega performs. Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. You're already +1 in free beers for opening day, so life is good. :)

Sadly, yes. I'm willing to bet that one of the guys on the re-entry list would have been just as good. Looks like Matias has a bias for players not from MLS. That's concerning.

On the upside, I've been whining that we need a starting quality GK, so if we sign Vega, I hope that he's that guy. Also, so what if he's 34? Keepers play longer, and we only need him to start for one or two seasons until JT is ready to take over full time.

I wonder if this means that we're going to trade Tarbell or Bersano? Maybe one of them goes to Reno?

Oh, and while this "might" plug one of our remaining major holes, I still think we're going to suck this season.

If this is that keeper and Almeyda wanted him, I suspect it has to do more with how he is with his feet, compared to current options.

Almeyda needs a savvy veteran presence in goal. There is too much at stake for on the job training. We need somebody to get the decision making right and not make a lot of bad positioning mistakes. Someone who can direct and command a back line...we might have to put up with a drop in athleticism to get savvy guile and presence. I think that's exactly what we're getting.

    @chris thebassplayer, I sure hope you're right.

As said, I'd have snagged one of the guys in the re-entry draft. Cheaper, USian, and probably decent.

They took the signing announcement off the front page of the website.

What lol... maybe they're just updating the website to show the actual signing instead of the announcement?
