The Dutch are better than Norway, and an attacking team, and so it would be unnatural for them to park the bus. They simply started with some sloppy, stupid defensive play and it cost them. I'm surprised they couldn't score in the second half. Both Norway and Sweden are rather boring, mostly defensive teams. I think the playoff drawing is today. It seems that there are two legs (matches?) for both the semis and final, according to the UEFA website, which surprises me.

It already happened: Netherlands will have to meet Denmark, in a repeat of the Euro 2017 clashes:

    All I will say is:

    Defense wins games
    Norway won without Ada
    Norway is in the WWC
I like Netherlands style of play and have nothing negative to say about them

well Norway had so much more in their favor; 15 out of 18 on their roster play either in Norway or Sweden, both of those leagues are in season compared to almost all the Dutch being on pre season club teams(if only this game was played early spring when Norway was pre season, the score probably be reversed)

Norway got a much stronger league than the Dutch(where most of their NT starters play outside the country). With all the momentum & huge home crowds they've had this year, why couldn't of they buttered up their own league with investment money? If I remember a few years ago, FC Twente beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League playoffs, but since then all the stars of that team left the coop.

having a strong domestic league is very important as it usual does it's best to correlate with it's nation's NT, as compared(from what I read from a German forum) Lyon refused to release one of it's players for the German's training camp weeks prior their last couple of qualifiers, only letting her go for the games itself during the open window week( so this is possibly what Wiegmann had to contend with a host of foreign clubs)

with the cards firmly stacked up against(as I've been suggesting) , there would of been no dishonor in 'parking the bus'. The Russian men did it(on their home soil) when they beat Spain this last WC. And they did it by what I used to think was a predominant Asian tactic, bu making two sets of 5 player lines, where by denying the passing lanes to Spain's famed tiki taka.

hey L'Orange, since this thread keeps taking over by trolls)the ones that might be into woso, but honestly don't care about the Dutch themselves), any chance we can find out what the major reason why the Dutch men's failed to qualify for their WC?(perhaps fwd might suggestions into their men's forum to see if it was for the same reasons?)

    thanks

Yes, OL have an habit of not releasing their internationals outside of FIFA windows: they did the same recently when they didn't allow Kumagai to take part to Asian Games for Japan.

  7. Nope. It was because of gros management failure. First of the KNVB not to choose Koeman as successor of van Gaal, second of the KNVB chosen lazy shit head Guus Hiddink who didnot bother like van Gaal did to be sure to compensate the obvious weaknesses in the squad and third the failure of the KNVB to see that Blind wasnot good enough and colleteral damaged by his assistence of Guus Hiddink and fourth the incredible poor self awarenes of Blind to not see he wasnot fit at all to take the job and fifth the failure of the KNVB to sack both Hiddink and Blind in time when there still was chance to qualify for either the EC or the WC.

Pretty much what FSF said above. They also lost a crucial away match in Bulgaria when an inexperienced young player started at center back (de Ligt of Ajax who is now almost world class but at the time of that match was only 17 years old).

EDIT: Also the match officials made a major blunder on an apparent match winning goal away at Sweden taking it off the board. We are still upset with the officials about this one!!:D

The Dutch men failed to qualify for the WC for various reasons. The team is going through a transition as the old greats (Sneijder, Robben, Van Persie) have retired from international play----and the NT coaches have struggled to identify the best squad. Every qualifying game would bring three, four or more new players, and the team never really jelled--not enough chemistry.

Coach Danny Blind seemed never to get his player selections right--and the capper was when he decided to start a promising young centerback, 17-year-old Matthijs de Ligt, against Bulgaria in what was an important qualifier. It was de Ligt's first international cap--and while he's become a very good player and is a regular starter for the team now--he made two big mistakes in the first half that led to two Bulgaria goals, and the Dutch inexplicably lost to that mediocre side. That loss really hurt their qualifying chances, as they also lost twice to France--who were just better. The Netherlands also got screwed out of a victory against Sweden, which proved very costly to their chances. The Dutch scored a late winning goal on a header but it was disallowed because the referee said the Dutch forward pushed off before the goal. It was the slightest of nudges and the call was terrible. That call ended up costing the Dutch as Sweden and The Netherlands tied for second in the group and Sweden got second on goal differential, knocking Oranje out.

Danny Blind was fired after the Bulgaria debacle and Dick Advocaat was brought in to coach the squad. The squad performed better with him but failed to qualify, and now Ronald Koeman is the coach. He was a popular choice, and we can only hope he gets things right. There is a lot of young talent among the Dutch players; it's a matter of Koeman getting his selections right and the group gaining experience. They'll be back!

HotJam2, RE your point about Russia parking the bus against Spain. Spain is a far better team than Russia, so it makes sense for Russia to park the bus against a better team. But you can't ask a good team, an attacking team like the Dutch women, to park the bus against a Norway team that, really, is not as good. The players would not like playing like that, and it is not their style. That said, had the Dutch not fallen behind so early on two dumb plays, they might have played a bit more defensively as the game moved along, but they didn't give themselves the chance.

The Dutch still have a chance to qualify, of course: They are the best of the four playoff teams--but these games are always tight, some opponents will play defensively, and so the Netherlands will have to play well. Maybe this situation will shake the team up and get them focused. This little playoff could also help steel them for the WC, if they qualify. However, Denmark will be a tough opponent--they are a good team, but they play a more open game than Norway and so that may help the Dutch. One thing that worries me about The Netherlands is that their centerbacks are a little slow--that is never a good thing. They get caught out sometimes, and Denmark has a couple of good forwards, notable Harder, so Dekker and Van der Graf will have to play well, along with their outside backs.

I agree: Denmark are close and Pernille Harder can always be dangerous in any situation, even if the rest of the team shoudn't perform well, but, player by player, Netherlands should be just better; and they somehow showed that (twice!) while battling vs Denmark at Euro 2017.

If they don't get nervous, I guess Dutch players should make it to the World Cup.

I saw where Arsenal made a couple of changes to its starting lineup yesterday that affected Dutch players on the squad. First, Van Veenendaal may have lost her starting job as keeper. Arsenal started their other keeper, a French player named Peyraud-Magnin, in yesterday's match against Liverpool--a 5-0 Arsenal shutout. We'll have to keep an eye on this and see if the Arsenal coach alternates his keepers and plays Van Veenendaal next game. If not, it won't be good for the Dutch NT as you want all your starters playing league games and staying sharp, and you can't stay sharp if you are not playing.

Also, Arsenal apparently moved Danielle Van de Donk from her accustomed midfield spot to outside back yesterday--giving Arsenal two Dutch starting outside backs (the other being Dominque Bloodworth (nee Janssen). Van de Donk is an excellent midfielder but Arsenal has two great mids in Jordan Nobbs and Kim Little and a Swiss player named Walti who is also very good. Apparently the coach thinks playing those three in the middle and moving Van De Donk back is best for the squad. I expect the Dutch player to get some time in the Arsenal midfield in the weeks to come, and let's hope so as she will be in the midfield for the NT regardless.

Miedema had a huge game yesterday against Liverpool-- three goals and at least one assist. She is seriously good.

Actually, I may have been wrong about Van de Donk, not sure. The Liverpool website had her listed as an outside back for the game, which surprised me, with Walti in midfield, but another site with player ratings for the game had Van de Donk in the midfield (with an excellent rating) and had Walti playing defense in the back.

Van Veenendaal was passed over for starting goalie in favor of the woman who plays (starts) in net for Lyon.

The date is set for Netherlands v Denmark, the World Cup playoff semi 1st leg

Friday night, 5 October in Breda
    https://www.onsoranje.nl/teams/207834/programma/wedstrijd/31002

before the return game 4 days later.

    From FIFA:

"50 minutes was all it took for the first leg of European champions the Netherlands's FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019 qualifying play-off with Denmark to sell out all 14,000 tickets. In a re-run of the UEFA Women's EURO 2017 final, having missed out on automatic places, the pair will face off home and away before taking on the winners of the tie between Belgium and Switzerland to snatch a late spot in France."

so let me get this straight; the Dutch come in as the highest ranked of the 4 wild berth/ playoff teams, yet have to face the 2nd highest ranked team(Denmark) instead of the lowest(Belgium) and now don't even get the home town advantage(which would be the 2nd game since there's a possibility of O.T.),

coupled that with the Dutch were only seeded #2 in their original group(Norway was the #1 seed). The group 's were announced before last year's Euro Champ. but still, lower ranked teams back then like Spain, Italy & Switzerland got #1 seeds.

sorry, but can't figure out European mindset, in the states everything(and I mean everything would of done based on the highest/lowest rankings.

I agree: Why the hell would UEFA seed teams for WC qualifying /before/ the Euro championship? That makes no sense--stupid. I also agree that the Dutch, as the higher seed, should be playing the second game at home, not the first. It shouldn't make a big difference if they play to their capabilities. However, Denmark is better in attack than Norway and will test the two slowish centerbacks for The Netherlands. The Dutch need a centerback with real recovery speed.

The draw was made on the 25th of April hence the pre-euros seeding. Could UEFA organize the draw after the Euros. I guess logistics is one of the reason why UEFA always does early draws as seen with u17 and u19 qualifying rounds.

They have quite a tight schedule. I guess it's decided years in advance? The World Cup quals started only a month after the 2017 Euros (and the WC prelims were even before it).

The line-up was PPM; Evans, Bloodworth, Quinn, McCabe; Waelti, Nobbs, Little; VDD, Miedema, Mead in 4-3-3 with in reality Mead tucked inside a little and McCabe as a left winger because there was no Liverpool player in her zone.

VDD has been really good for more than a year now, her place in the starting 11 was under threat when Little came back from Seattle, she reivented herself as a denfensive midfielder for most of the season and played well. Now back playing as a winger since Arsenal have less attacking options.

even if the groups for drawn just prior to the Euros, Holland was ranked #13 by FIFA. Most likely #7 in Europe, but cuz France had a bye, at #6. Which should of gotten them a first place seed(within the 7 groups available) But guessing they didn't go with FIFA but with Uefa instead, which in it's incredibly screwed up version, had the Dutch probably ranked lower, yet had England as their #1 at the end of 2017 despite the Dutch kicking their butts(3-0) at Euros.

The player I like to see switched is Spitse. She usually takes the free kicks/PK's, but she's incredibly slow, especially for a central mid having such an importance spot in an 4-3-3. I wish they would replace her with Jill Roord, who just scored a few days ago, on a nice free kick for Bayern Munich, as well as dominated the middle with her incredible speed & athleticism.

Denmark will have a friendly vs Norway just prior to their playoffs. I hope that Wiegmann has a tune up game as well

btw.....L'orange@ here's a blast from the past(from 3 years), as FC Twente upset Bayern Munich in the Champions League playoffs(that's despite Miedema playing for BM). Take a look at the then 18 year old, JIll Roord score (10 second mark of the vid). What's not showing is just prior she nutmegged right through, two prominent German players(Behringer & Leupolz) to set up that incredible run.

FC Twente Vrouwen stunt met uitschakeling Bayern München in Champions League - YouTube
why hasn't been Jill Roord been given a more prominent role with the NT is hard to figure,

Thanks, HotJam, for the video of FCTwente and Jill Roord (and Miedema). I'm sure Roord is in Wiegman's plans, but I can only assume that the coach feels she is not quite ready to start. She's only 21, so there is time. I haven't seen enough of Roord to have my own assessment of her play, but she's obviously considered a player with potential. I agree that Spitze is not a great player--but she is the team's on-field leader, and free-kick specialist, and so valuable in some important ways.

I'm sure you saw that Wiegman won FIFA's Coach of the Year award for 2017. She deserved it. Now, she needs to earn the award again and get her team into the World Cup.

As for Roord, I see that she has scored in the last three games for Bayern Munich. Problem is, the Frauen Bundesliga is not very competitive. BM and Wolfsburg are the only good teams in the league, as far as I know. It is hard to really improve if your team is beating most of your opponents by 4-0, 6-0 10-1, etc. I don't think Frankfurt, Groenen's team, can play with BM or Wolfsburg. Groenen should be playing in the English Super League, and I'm surprised that she isn't this year, frankly, after he great performance in the Euro. Maybe the transfer market in women's club football just isn't lucrative enough to make team switches worthwhile? Not sure, but Groenen and Roord, and Beerenstyn, too (also with BM) would all be better off playing in a tougher league, IMO.

You've seen this? A bit old melodramatic but cool.

  25. And she made her second hattrick in 8 days against Lewes FC.
