for someone who strikes and passes the ball so cleanly i always wondered what Carrick would be like at direct free kicks. i'd like to think decent at least but it's no guarantee
Carrick, the most underrated English player ever? www.espn.co.uk/football/english-premier-league/23/blog/post/3493850/michael-carrick-manchester-united-one-of-the-most-underrated-players-ever In a country that has overhyped so many players over the years, it's really hard to think of many who were underrated the way Carrick was. The fact that Gareth Barry has more caps and was regularly picked ahead of him says it all IMO...
Ever is a long time, but Carrick is definitely the most underrated English footballer of the EPL era. There were those who considered Carrick "a flop" at the end of his first season at Old Trafford. How wrong they were then. How wrong they were proven to be. The only concession I would make, however, is that Carrick performed poorly against Barcelona twice. True, the opposition was possibly the greatest club football side ever assembled in 2009, but Carrick performed poorly when a top performance from him could have made the difference to at least getting us to a pk shootout against the superior side. But a brilliant career it was, one that is criminally underrated.
What are your favorite Carrick moments? There are quite a few. He had a few assist to Chicharito that were sublime passes. The header at Stamford Bridge, the equalizer at home (was it Villa or Newcastle we tied 3-3 after being down 3-1). These passes were dropped right into Cheechs's head from 50 yards+ away. His first assist to Rooney vs Bolton, a preview of what we would be getting from him.
As it the case for anyone, it's really hard to pick just one moment (with so many great ones on offer). But eventhough this did not lead to a goal, I always loved that pass from him: so beautiful and perfect and just an awesome representation of who Carrick was about really.
Some of his left footed goals in that compilation... most good players out there will never catch the ball as sweetly on their strong foot.
aside from the obvious ones i liked his involvement in the CL win over chelsea when Rooney scored. iirc it was a long diagonal. think it stands out more for being a part of a total good move rather than abeing a supremely brilliant individual pass
