There's some reporting that in the sealed Mueller-related grand jury proceedings, there is evidence contradicting Trump's written answers regarding his knowledge of WikiLeaks. @xtomx @yossarian Under what circumstances do grand jury proceedings become unprotected? Also, I'm interested in history...are they permanently sealed? Or will my granddaughter be able to write a dissertation on the Mueller report using grand jury testimony? What do you think “I would like you to do us a favor though” means?
Under Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure Rule 6 (e), and the Haldeman case from the Watergate era, Congress can direct grand jury proceedings be unsealed for impeachment proceedings. But in a more recent case, McKeever, from this year, such proceedings cannot be unsealed just for oversight purposes (ie., without an impeachment or other judicial proceeding). So unless the Mueller-related proceedings are unsealed as part of a judicial proceeding (or one of the other exceptions under 6 (e)), a journalist or historian wouldn't have good legal grounds to make such a request.
