The same sentiments were voiced by Alfredo Di Stefano after the conclusion of the cup. He considered Tostao the most important and intelligent player on that team.
They didn't said anything about the shitty refereeing lol. Pele could've easily scored 2 goals (including a solo goal) but was hacked down. He also escaped a card on that game. The refereeing was even worse in the final
At least Pele did not threaten, intimidate, buy or physically harm journalists to get better ratings, lol.
Mbappe received a 9 from L'Equipe for his game against Argentina in this World Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo also got a 9 for his game against Spain.
Yep, I think I/we were taking it for granted anyway, but I can confirm the ratings on Everyfourthyear.com do match those exactly!
One other game that I decided I was interested to see in full for my own entertainment was the Italy vs USSR semi-final from Euro 88, so I thought I might as well add my idea of ratings too for that. I did see some Euro 88 games at the time, but I'm thinking probably not that one in full. At half-time I have something like this, and I'm thinking of watching the rest today: Italy - Zenga 6.5, Bergomi 7, Ferri 6.5, Baresi 8, Maldini 6, De Napoli 6.5, Ancelotti 6, Giannini 7, Donadoni 7, Vialli 6, Mancini 6.5 USSR - Dasaev 7, Bessonov 6, Khidiyatullin 7, Kuznetsov 6.5, Rats 7, Aleinikov 6.5, Zavarov 7, Mikhailichenko 6.5, Litovchenko 7, Protasov 6.5, Gotsmanov 6
I had glanced at it when Vegan posted it but from the Euro 88 thread here are the Guerin Sportivo ratings for that game which I'm checking now that I decided my own for the full game (the other semi-final was posted from the same page at the same time - I do tend to go along with Puck regarding Van Basten in that game as I've previously thought of his performance as a 9 out of 10 kind of display or at the least approaching it, even if maybe a bit below the England game): These are what I decided on myself at full-time (for the 90 minutes): Italy - Zenga 6.5, Bergomi 6.5, Ferri 7, Baresi 8, Maldini 6.5 (De Agostini 7), De Napoli 6, Ancelotti 5.5, Giannini 7, Donadoni 6.5, Vialli 6, Mancini 6.5 (Altobelli 5.5) USSR - Dasaev 7, Bessonov 6 (Demienenko 6.5), Khidiyatullin 7.5, Kuznetsov 6.5, Rats 7, Aleinikov 7, Zavarov 8, Mikhailichenko 6.5, Litovchenko 7, Protasov 7, Gotsmanov 6.5 So I seem to be slightly more generous, but moreso to Italians (I am not so annoyed about them going out though, especially 30 years later lol, even if I do remember them being my tip to win that tournament before it kicked off, so like I say I think 'home' players will get exaggerated ratings either way at times from publications and arguably that happened here a bit I think from GS). But clearly I've given Giannini a better assessment overall, and rated Mancini a bit higher at least for what he did while he was on the pitch. In the USSR team I was more impressed with the sweeper (I've got him lined up as RCB, but in the second half he was definitely more LCB) than the stopper, unlike GS, and we have a notable difference when it comes to Zavarov and Mikhailichenko in midfield. Other ratings would be interesting to see, but between us we seem to have Baresi as MOTM (7.5 certainly seems to be a very good rating from GS in general as not that many 8s are handed out and even less 8.5s, in Serie A too - in that sense maybe an 8 for Van Basten vs Germany wouldn't have seemed especially harsh).
On the great goal Carlos Alberto scored against Italy in the final, it's Tostao who directs Pele to play the assist. He certainly held a lot of influence, but I would liken him more to Giroud, who does much the same for France as Tostao did for Brazil.
