Hi everybody. This is my attempt at the Fritz Walter's career goal story, on the basis of what @Gregoriak did some years ago for Gerd Müller (see http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/the-gerd-müller-goal-story.899630/). Why Fritz Walter, if I'm not even German and there's scant information and no video on his club career? Well, because it's fun. I've been trying to compile stats about the great goalscorers of the past for years, and Fritz Walter's case is most interesting. There's only very few data on pre-Bundesliga (and especially pre-1945) German club games, but I managed to find a couple of very good sources which I integrated with the things I've read here and there. My main source for this thread will be the awesome website Der Betze Brennt (www.der-betze-brennt.de), but this source itself has many holes so if you know anything more please just post it. Essentially, Walter scored TONS of goals in all sorts of German leagues, and German football historians know that the league structure before the Bundesliga (and especially before 1945) was REALLY messy. So hundreds of goals, a sizable portion of which -especially in the first part of his career- against really low opposition because before the end of WWII the Gauliga system (not to talk about the Tschammerpokal, the German cup of the time...) allowed for quite strong teams to face in their own regional leagues much weaker opposition than they would have found in a single-league national championship. So yeah, as I said: fun. Obviously Fritz Walter is rightly remembered today for having been one of the greatest German forwards of all time, so in any case exploring his games and stats won't be a complete waste of time Anyway, here's the first part:

Kudos for this project which surely is not an easy task to go about! Recently I have uploaded the "Oberliga" lineups from 1948 to 1963 to my website. All of the information has been researched and compiled by the extraordinary late Raphael Keppel. (who, before he became an author of football statistic books once hijacked an airplane). You might be able to close some holes in case there's missing data: http://www.historical-lineups.com/german-bundesliga/oberliga/oberliga-south-west.html (South-West, the league Kaiserslautern was playing in) And the German championship final rounds 1948 to 1963: http://www.historical-lineups.com/german-championship-1949-1963.html And the German Cup (1935 to 1988): http://www.historical-lineups.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/19411.pdf Taken from the above pdf file for 1940-41, I found that Kaiserslautern did reach the next round played on 8 June 1941 where they were eliminated by Borussia Neunkirchen losing 3-7.

Very interesting project. On RSSSF there is a recent file by Matthias Arnhold (Jan 2016) giving season-by-season Div 1 league matches and goals for Walter. If his stats are correct, Walter did play on 7/1/1940 v VfR Frankenthal. And in this game and the one on 26/11/1939 v GfL Darmstadt, Walter scored a total of 7 goals. (His team scored 9 in the two matches). The same source would suggest that Walter scored 2 goals on 19/4/1942 against VfR Frankenthal. (Result 9-1).
Thanks! And thank you for the info about the 1941 Tschammerpokal, I needed that! I knew of your historical lineups project, and actually I've used your very valuable website to retrieve more than a couple of data! Do you have plans to update your work (if possible) with the data from the 1945-51 period?
Thanks peterht I knew of that RSSSF page (it's actually when I saw the original version of that page, 3 or 4 years ago, that I started to research data about Walter's career!), and yes I've done some maths with the data it shows, but since there are another couple of sources which give slightly different numbers of matches and goals I'd prefer to retrieve info about the specific matches that I'm missing so that my data will be more correct.
So, for now that's... 1937-38: 4 matches and 5+ (and possibly as many as 7) goals in the preliminary rounds of the Tschammerpokal. 1938-39: 22 matches and 59+ (and possibly as many as 61) goals in the second division: 4 matches and 5 goals in the second division playoff; at least 1 match and 1 goal in the preliminary rounds of the Tschammerpokal. NOTE: I made a mistake in the post above. Walter did play in the 10-4-39 match; I just don't know whether he scored. 1939-40: 10/11 matches and 20+ (and possibly as many as 29) goals in the Gauliga Südwest (Saarpfalz group); 1 match and 1 goal in the playoff to determine the winner of the Saarpfalz group; 2 matches and 2 goals in the playoff to determine the winner of the Gauliga Südwest; 3 matches and 17 goals in the preliminary rounds of the Tschammerpokal; 1 match and 3 goals with the German national team. 1940-41: 1 match and 2 goals in the Tschammerpokal; 12 matches and 16 goals in the Gauliga Südwest; 1/2 matches in the preliminary rounds of the Tschammerpokal, in which Kaiserslautern scored 18 goals; 10 matches and 7 goals with the German national team. 1941-42: 14 matches and 37+ goals (and possibly as many as 46) in the Gauliga Westmark; 2 matches and 5 goals in the Deutsche Meisterschaft; 8 matches and 4 goals with the German national team. 1942-43: 3 matches and 1 goal in the Gauliga Westmark; he might have played in up to 4 of the 9 matches that Kaiserslautern played in the preliminary rounds of the Tschammerpokal; in these 4 matches Kaiserslautern scored 27 goals; an unknown (and not high) number of matches and goals for TSG Diedenhofen in the second division; 5 matches and 5 goals with the German national team.

Plus, data here are a bit controversial: some resources on the net, including wikipedia and RSSSF (http://www.rsssf.com/players/fwalterdata.html) give Walter 14 matches and 16 goals this year. But yeah, according to the match by match report by Der Betze Brennt website, he played in 17 matches. I'm a bit puzzled about this season, but at least apparently we have data for 12 out of 18 matches...

1945-51 is very difficult regarding Germany (the earliest info I have is 1947-48). For other countries of course data is available (Argentina for example) or England.
