Maintaining a healthy first 11 might be a real issue as well.

I'm surprised so many people are saying Parke should be picked.

Nobody's bothered that he'll miss the first 4 games of the season?

    Re: The Expansion Draft Thread

With Keller (and Likely Eylander) set in goal and Ljungberg at right mid, the other MLS teams figured that their pricey players in those positions (G - Onstad, Crayton, Hartman; RM - Gaven, O'Brien, Cooke) would be safe on the unprotected list. I would expect a draft similar to SJ - half of the players will stick on the roster - a few will be traded - the rest will not make the team or sign in another league. Some options for a draft:

    TOR - Johann Smith - F
    RSL - Nathan Sturgis - D
NY - Jeff Parke - D (could be tradebait for LA - otherwise, Jimeniz could be the pick)
    NE - Wells Thompson - M
    LA - Willie Randolph - D
    HOU - Nate Jaqua - F
    KC - Tyson Wahl - D
    DC - Joe Vide - M
    CLM - Brad Evans - M
    CHI - Brandon Prideaux - D

No picks - SJ, DAL, CHIV, COL

Ya, my point was more just how quick the turn around was and how it is impressive.
But if you were making he decisions, would you keep the American who is healthy, or the INT who blew out his knee.

    *shrugs*

It prolly doesn't matter. They're an expansion team so they're pretty much going to suck next year.

Well, it's a 30-game season, so they'll have him for the other 26.
And they're going to have him for more than this season.
And they're going to struggle the first few games anyway.

Important to remember: Kasey Keller was an allocation player, so he doesn't count against our 2009 cap.

So that leaves Ljunberg, Le Toux, & Nyassi so far.(400k, 87k, 33k)

    Re: The Expansion Draft Thread

    http://web.mlsnet.com/about/league.jsp?section=regulations&content=overview

Each year the MLS Competition Committee determines how much allocation money is made available to each team. Allocation money can be traded by teams. Allocation money does not count against a team's salary budget and can be used:

    • To sign players new to MLS (that is, a player that did not play in MLS during the previous season).
    • To re-sign an existing MLS player, with League approval.
    • In connection with the exercise of an option to purchase a player's rights or the extension of a player's contact for the second year provided the player was new to MLS in the immediately prior year.
Allocation money cannot otherwise be used to buy down the salary budget number of players already under contract to the League, nor can allocation money be used to buy down the budget number of a Designated Player.

    Re: The Expansion Draft Thread

Do you know what his salary is? I can believe they may use some allocation money to buy down the cap figure, but I'd be surprised if they are using to cover the whole thing.

I don't know, but Kasey came home to play and not make more bank. He's giving us 'a deal,' so to speak.

I think Jaqua would be a better front pairing with Letoux than Razov would. Letoux is quick and makes intelligent runs. Jaqua is going to hold the ball better and will win more in the air. I just think Letoux will play off Jaqua better.

Not necessarily. He could be exposed for next years Expansion Draft (Philly) or the one for the year after (2 teams in 2011).

    Just sayin'..

    Re: The Expansion Draft Thread

Here are the 10 picks I’d make if I were Seattle, keeping in mind the following:

    • I don’t need a starting GK; Keller’s set there. I also have at least one starter in the midfield (Ljungberg) locked up though I don’t know how the team intends to use him. I could see him wide right, in the middle or even perhaps as a withdrawn forward, depending on who else the team gets.
    • I don’t really know what LeToux or Nyassi are going to be able to contribute at the MLS level. I’m going in assuming that the former is a #2 striker at best, and the latter is “for the future.”
    • I don’t want to rely on the expansion draft for my starters at lead striker, central mid (if Ljungberg won’t be there) or center back, so I’m looking for guys who are at or near the starter level, who may get there in a year or two, or who can at least give me quality minutes off the bench. And I don’t want to pay a ton for bench players so I will try to go young if I can.
    • I’m interested in trade bait, but I’d rather have players.

    Here we go:

    • Flores, CHV. I was also interested in Vaughn, but I like Flores’s speed, youth and ability to play wide positions pretty well.
    • Pappa, CHI. Looks like a promising young attacking player. Could be a steal.
    • Evans, CLB. Could be trade bait, but if not I see him as a potential starter with a high ceiling.
    • Burse, DAL. There’s my #2 GK.
    • Jaqua, HOU. I actually like Ashe here, but it seems like the table is set for Seattle to grab Jaqua here and set him up as a #1 or #2 striker and so I might as well not stand in the way of destiny. Not a bad move but I’d still want another starter-type player at this position if I were running the team.
    • Thompson, KC. They just traded for Cristman, so he’s clearly not wanted there anyway. I’m liking a forward line with Jaqua, Thompson, LeToux and another starter-level player for an expansion team. I did think about Hohlbein here, too.
    • Thompson, NE. A versatile player who can give me good minutes in different spots.
    • Mendes, NY. Could maybe go with Parke here, too. Both are proven players who could pair with a “big-time” signing at this position.
    • Sturgis, RSL. Despite some health issues, too much versatility at the MLS level to pass up.
    • Smith, TOR. I’ll take a flyer on a flyer.

With these picks, I’m passing on players from Colorado, D.C. and the Galaxy.

    Re: The Expansion Draft Thread

Seattle should use Ljungberg in the same role akin to Blanco, Schelotto, etc.: let him roam free with few defensive responsibilities. With that in mind, I wouldn't want him out wide, ESPECIALLY when they could use Terry Cooke there. Cooke out wide with a guy like Jaqua in the box = dangerous.

I am pretty sure that if we take a keeper in this draft, it will be for trade.
Eylander should get the nod as the #2 keeper here in Seattle.

The old Sounders and the MLS club are different business entities. They have to be let go from their old contracts if they are to be able to sign with MLS.
    Chris Henderson is technical director.
