A very interesting article due to the comparison with Spain more than anything else, but I think they're deliberately overplaying the lack of success from that U17 group. They focus on just the record of the starting XI from the final which conveniently allows them to ignore the games that other players in the squad like like Fry, Moore, Sims and Armstrong have played this season, as well as discounting Roberts' season because he's in Scotland.
Also there is Gomez, who played regularly for Liverpool one season earlier, before his serious injury.
If you're in the West Ham academy look away now, he's talking about West Ham by the way. I think we all have to except that it is extremely unlikely that a teenager will break into a PL team full of seasoned international. dg https://t.co/R0c1SimdVr— David Gold (@davidgold) May 20, 2017
I think it could be a pretty exciting summer for young English prospects going to pastures new. There are so many that could be permanent transfers. Also loans. Just a few Chelsea one's. Talk is that Tammy Abraham could be used in the deal to take Lukaku back to Chelsea. Ruben Loftus-Cheek definitely wants to leave on loan next season. Talk of Newcastle or Watford. If Huddersfield get promoted they want to sign Izzy Brown on a perm deal.
Pretty amateur. There doesn't seem an obvious plan or path way at the minute which is frustrating for the club but comments like these almost make you think what is the point of having the academy then ? You can't see this thought process changing soon either. Also unlike West Ham in that lots of their u23s have actually been brought in from outside ie Dobson, Kemp, Holland, Fletcher, Samuelsen, Martinez.
I'd have hoped Abraham would have got some match time at Chelsea next season (rather than being signed by someone like Everton).
I think everyone around here would like Chelsea to give serious match time to their talented young English players but as long as that is a forlorn hope it's good to have an exit route. Going to Everton could be a very good move for Abraham. The Mirror seems to think that £3m would be the asking price for Izzy Brown. That sounds really cheap for a player like him.
The rules need to be changed because the clubs are never going to take risks they don't have to. There should be massive restrictions to how much clubs can pay these kids if they're not getting first team football, and quotas too once we're outside the EU.
Going to Everton could be a very bad move for Abraham - while he could still make it at Chelsea. Best see if he gets some game time - now he's had a season's work experience - and if he's in the manager's plans. Izzy Brown is a different matter, and may as well leave now.
I personally don't think that Abraham will make it at Chelsea mainly because they don't give there youngsters a chance, so if I was him and Everton offer him a legit chance of first team football then he would be stupid to turn it down same goes for Brown, and if RLC has any sense he will jump ship as well because he is just treading water at Chelsea IMO.
Abraham should go to Everton next season if he's offered the chance. He has it in him to be the number 1 there and Everton's a very good stepping stone club for both top clubs and the national team.
If he can get regular footy for a decent side like Everton then that is better than anything Chelsea will offer him. An easier route to the top then just treading water like Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek for another 3 years
We know what a fantastic job the Chelsea academy has done for a number of years now. The better England probably started from the '93 group. Who has left from then ? McEachran ? Obviously Bamford to after purchasing him. Here is John Swift (95) saying he is glad he left Chelsea : http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/john-swift-glad-ditched-chelsea-10461553 Chelsea's academy players are filling up all England squads and rightly so but these players are our future and just playing for a parent club at relatively high level is good enough for their progression and experience and feeling at home in an enivornment with a constant and Everton certainly is that if it fell that way. These players are England's future. Some might be later developers than others for England recognition but we certainly need to get as many pushing for England selection down the line. To think how many young Chelsea players are involved this summer that could easily be playing first team football regularly if they were at a club with a culture and willingness to bring players through. Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton and even Spurs would definitely be finding places for these guys. UNDER 21 EUROS Nathaniel Chalobah Ruben Loftus-Cheek Lewis Baker Kasey Palmer (will probably miss out due to injury) Izzy Brown Tammy Abraham UNDER 20 WORLD CUP Fikayo Tomori Jake Clarke-Salter Dom Solanke UNDER 20 TOULON TOURNAMENT Reece James (u18) Josh Grant (u19) Tariq Uwakwe (u18) Ike Ugbo (u19) Martell Taylor-Crossdale (u18) UNDER 19 EUROS Jay Da Silva Trevoh Chalobah (u18) Dujon Sterling (u18) Mason Mount (u18) * Jacob Maddox maybe
Spurs squad for Hong Kong includes Amos, Sterling, Miller, Liverpool squad for Australia includes Alexander-Arnold, Randall, Gomez, Stewart & Brewster
Not sure where best to put this, but just totalled up minutes for U22s in the Championship and it comes out like this: Broken down between permanent players, and loan players, and those currently aged 20 and under and those aged 21 and 22. Taking out loans, it is Forest, Ipswich, Preston, Leeds and Reading leading the way. A bit of info... Only 24 players played the equivalent of 20 full games (6 PL loanees), 21 Englishmen, an Irishman, a Namibian and Ronalso Vieira Only 6 players played the equivalent of 30 full games (3 PL loanees): Ben Osborn (NF), Tammy Abraham (BC/Che), Grant Ward (Ips), Ryan Kent (Bar/Liv), Sam Gallagher (BR/Sot) and Callum Robinson (PNE) Chelsea had more minutes to U20 players in this league than any other club with 7,616 minutes. If anyone else wants to know anything give me a shout as have all the data in front of me. WIll look at the PL now.
For completeness I did this for the PL too, and it makes terrible reading.... Broke it down between English and Overseas players (including Scotland, Wales, etc) as not enough loans to worry about. Sunderland lead but mostly doe to loans from Januzaj and Denayer, plus minutes from Ndong. Looking at minutes played, as above only 9 players aged 22 or under have played half the available minutes for their side - 5 Englishmen in Alli, Sterling, Chambers, Stones and Ward-Prowse. The non-English players are Ndong, Bellerin, Denayer and Sane. English player wise the teams giving most minutes to players 22 and under are: Man City - 4,528 Everton - 3,738 Spurs - 3,538 Southampton - 3,134 Man Utd - 2,789 12 teams in the league have given the equivalent of less than 10 games across the whole season. That's a shade under 2.4% of the available minutes going to developing young English players - and literally 0 minutes in the case of Swansea and Stoke.
Article on some u8 players signed up: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-areas-snapped-Everton-Manchester-United.html
Never seen those U8s but the 3 older youngsters mentioned in the article - O'Grady, Veevers and O'Reilly are all real deals. O'Reilly is touted as City's best U12s while O'Grady is playing up a year at United.
Something that I've been thinking over with the '93, '97 and now '00 groups. Obviously there is still time but the '00 groups seem to have an XI and bench of special talent which is what we need but groups like '93 and '97 are extremely vital to produce good players and more players competing. Is it just me or is there nice depth building up in the '99s ? From the '93 group Played in Premier League 16/17 GK : Butland DF : M.Keane, Gibson, Maguire, Flanagan MF : Chamberlain, Barkley FWD : Kane, Berahino, Wickham, Bamford, W.Keane (Afobe) *Played for England or set to in Gibson's case Played in Championship 16/17 GK : Johnstone DF : Lascelles, Coady, L.Moore, Obita, Bidwell, Robinson MF : Pritchard, Reach, Yennaris, Ralls, McEachran, Thorne Caught in no-mans land Wisdom, Garbutt, Morrison The one's disappearing into the wildnerness Pilatos T.Kane Thorpe L.Williams Hall L.Cole Aneke Overall it has been a good group for us. Really started getting England producing at youth tournaments again and provided players at senior level and a good depth of English player in the game when it is not easy to get chances anymore in the Championship let alone Premier League.
