We need to cast the match coming up on Saturn's Day as a contest btwn The Greatest Musical Act in the History of Ever v. Music To Open A Vein By. If you happen to favour The Smiths over The Beatles, for shame.
You don't remember that from a few seasons ago? Young claims it never happened but that's a hell of a fake if it didn't.
In the heat of a footbal match I guess you might not notice.... yick..... anyway - let's do a cr@p in their net a few times on Saturday
Never fancied the Beatles that much and the Smiths were one the greatest band of all time. A more fair comparison would be the Bunnymen vs the Smiths. the Smiths would still win but not by much.
My theory about him being a hidden troll (much more undercover than that Tito Titty bitch) is starting to make sense...
whether you fancied them or not, only in a drunken aggrandizement in Ian McCullough's head would Echo & the Bunnymen elevate to any kind of same level as the Beatles ..... ffs..... A couple of bands from out of the 80's might approach that, so, maybe the Smiths approach it, Talking Heads or maybe REM do, but not any of those boys from Liverpool..... Or maybe I'm wrong - maybe we should give them the Liam Gallagher award for not rating themselves so highly....
Actually a mate of mine feels the same way Smiths>Beatles. Thing is he grew up in Bootle on the same street as one of the Beatles (think it was Lennon) but never liked them. He spent the 80's following both LFC and the Smiths to the end of the earth (or Europe). He was part of the Bootle Boys group and had a flag made with the Liverbird that said "There is a light that never goes out" that they would bring to every match and gig. Surely, @usscouse, you remember seeing this?
that's nice. except Lennon didn't grow up in Bootle. none of the Beatles did. sounds like your friend is BSing you.
Let's see - a band that the entire world embraced vs a band that hipsters embraced in order to be counterculture. Tough call.
By the way - just to make sure I wasn't being too biased I went and listed to several Smiths songs this morning on YouTube (probably shouldn't have as Morrisey "dancing" or "swaying" in those videos was comical) - they just aren't memorable and, maybe it's his distinctive voice, but all their songs sound exactly the same. I tried to reconcile that with the wiki write up of them being some indie sensations and cutting edge and I'm left baffled.
The Smiths were notable and groundbreaking in several respects, but had a small fraction of the Beatles' prominence and influence. Morrissey's vocal style was one element; to a musician Johnny Marr's guitar work is really the band's most substantial contribution. He's truly a cult hero.
In fairness, more than Hipsters embraced The Smiths. They were a great band. Just not quite at that exalted level. Johnny Marr was probably the best Guitaris\t to come out fo the 80's (if you don't count those two mesmeric geniuses with the australian band The Church.....
@ zaq - Johnny Marr was probably the best Guitaris\t to come out fo the 80's --- nah. not even close. if we're talking just English/Irish/Scots, then Holdsworth, Knopfler, Gary Moore. Marr was nowhere near the virtuoso of those three. if you're basing your assessment on composing rather than playing, maybe you're in the ballpark, but only then
