Not to take anything away from your Ronaldo point but what about the players that do a job of keeping the other team from scoring, don’t they help to “win games”?, I mean I guess they could have a situation where they just play with goal scorers and just have teams rack up goals until the time runs out or everyone collapses from exhaustion and determine who’s won by who’s scored the most I suppose, try something more exciting for some.
The argument for VVD is that Liverpool conceded more than 20 less goals last season compared to the prior year. He only played 14 games for Liverpool in 17-18 because I think he signed mid-season. In the EPL goals conceded went from 38 to 22. That's a sizable difference in a team that didn't change that much. They did get a much better GK but you probably can't attribute most of that difference on that. They also bought Fabinho who has become a good acquisition that solidified their midfield. So you can make that argument that it's not just VVD. But that's as close as you can get to doing a before/after effect for the addition of a defender.
Difference is Madrid fans love the team, while all the fake fans of Barca love Messi. If he went to City tomorrow they'd follow him there. Most don't even care about the guy disappearing on crucial ucl games. Imagine if Real was eliminated back to back the way Barca did. And kept the same coach and superstar after that. We'd boo Ronaldo, we'd boo casillas, we'd boo Zizou, we'd boo whoever just bring glory to our team.
