Comment on WST Christopher Harris AUGUST 18, 2017 It is correct. Taylor Twellman posted on Twitter that ESPN didn’t get a chance to promote that the game would be on ESPN2. But to me, that’s no excuse. If soccer fans really want to watch a game, it’s pretty easy to find out when they’re on (thank you Google) like they do for other leagues.
From Australia and often pop in to see how the MLS is going. Does the MLS have some grand plan to grow the TV audience like with 28 teams by 2022 if In got that right. With over 300 million people what is an acceptable TV audience ??? A post by Footsatt shows a chart of the team codes and it seems the only thing missing is a match day audience... https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/when-will-the-mls-be-top-4.1983851/page-26 I was in the US on business for 7 weeks in March / April / May in New York and Orlando and went to some Orlando games and enjoyed the crowds and the game day experience.... but the media what there was seemed hostile to Football, and many Football fans I spoke too preferred to watch South American teams in particular... Is there a plan to convert the broader Football family to the MLS and if so what ratings would be considered successful... say 400 K per match with 28 teams and 14 weekly games ???
300k for the 3-5 matches a week on TV would be considered a success right now. The TV contract runs out in 2022 by which time we could optimistically get to 400k. Meanwhile Liga MX and Premier League matches are getting a million and some UCL games would if they weren't played during the working day.
We have similar issues in Australia, a large player base, with many in the Football community not engaging in the local competition.
god i hope mls is at 400k a match by then. the problem is the older teams/cities. it seems all the newer clubs are buying in. i wish a few of the older teams would push for kansas city style rebrands.
MLS gets consistently good attendances but more importantly, most stadiums are owned or operated by the clubs themselves. It's just media that's the problem.
La Liga would be a perfect pairing for whichever network has Premier League. England is in an earlier time zone and the Spanish schedule games later in the evening, up to 9 PM local. Premier league in the US is done by 1:30 PM Saturdays and 12:00 PM Sundays Eastern time. That basically still allows to get in a live La Liga game, on most days even a doubleheader. Also La Liga offers Friday content, which Premier League usually leaves open. My other wish is for Liga MX to land on a network like FOX (English). Other than MLS there isn't enough soccer that airs outside the traditional European time zone window. Of course getting soccer on primetime in the US is not easy, but Liga MX has a diverse schedule. They provide Friday night content, mid day Sunday, Sunday afternoon and late starting games on Saturday.

I always thought it was the dumping of that lying, cheating, condescending, bullying, fake cyclists organization from the name that helped KC
Depressing, below average even for FS1. 289,000 Premier League Huddersfield / Newcastle 8/20/2017 NBCSN; 289000 Nothing frustrates me more than this. Why? Why do more people want to watch this than Seattle-Portland or Toronto-NYCFC?!
I'd think one reason is while many MLS fans also watch EPL (as well as other leagues); a large number of EPL fans do not watch MLS. Purely anecdotal, I can't tell you how many soccer people - who have never been out of this country - I run into that follow the EPL but have no idea what's going on in MLS. I even recently had to listen to someone complain about MLS not having pro/rel and how it would so obviously improve soccer in this country.........Yes, sometimes my life at a soccer field is like a bad thread from "You Be The Don". And no, I'm not in denial or making up excuses; I do realize the EPL is simply more popular than MLS.
Expect low numbers for Seattle-Portland this weekend as it clashed with Game of Thrones. That may also have affected the attendance.
It ended rather late in the Central and Eastern time zones. I watched it to the end but if I lived in the EDT zone, I probably wouldn't have.
228k on ESPN for Friday's Hudson River Derby: SOURCE 326k on FS1 for Seattle-Portland: SOURCE The other two games (MTL v TFC on ESPN & LA v SJ on FS1) aren't listed here. We'll likely get those numbers tomorrow from one of the usual Twitter sources.
"Non-major" markets SEA-POR drew 326k on FS1 going against the GoT finale and VMAs. "Non-major" markets ORL-ATL drew 338k on a Friday night on July 21. Meanwhile the "glamour" big market matchups have drawn: Sun 5/14 NY/LA - 149k on FS1 Sat 6/24 NY/NYC - 467k on big FOX Sun 8/6 NYC/NY - 240k on FS1 Sat 8/12 LA/NYC - 73k on ESPN2 Fri 8/25 NY/NYC - 228k on ESPN These big-market matchups have performed tepidly this season. Yet there's hesitation with allowing Sacramento and Cincinnati into the league because they're not "glamour" TV markets?
I'd rather watch SEA-POR but its a tossup between TFC-NYCFC and Huddersfield-Newcastle. To be fair though, if it were WBA-Stoke I'd pick the MLS game. I have a good friend who's a die-hard Newcastle fan (since he has extended family that live there) and I'm hoping to see Huddersfield be the first town team to survive in the EPL since Blackburn.
Compare that with overall viewership and MLS looks even better. pic.twitter.com/LqkluDnZsr— Sports TV Ratings (@SportsTVRatings) August 30, 2017
I thought the story was he hurt NFL ratings last year... maybe he's holding a grudge from the USFL days. The truth is pretty complicated, because reality has a lot of factors. For some (including myself), seeing serious injuries, especially the head injuries which the league even now minimizes is painful. Others dislike the volume or leanings of political commentary, whether overt or tacit. Cord-cutters, scaled down packages, and those who aren't signing up for cable at all means fewer homes get ESPN than in a couple decades. People have less patience than ever with commercial breaks. And others just have too much other stuff to watch on their on demand platforms or DVR. How much weight should be given to each factor is up for debate, but each one is real.
