They've convinced themselves on that side of the board that Mexico sucks and that the US just happens to suck more. Sadly for them, Mexico actually has a great group of players that will be around 5-10 more years. We probably can't beat the top few teams in the world but we can compete vs everyone else.
I don't believe in the mentality take. Except for maybe 2002 (and possibly not even then b/c that US team was hella good), we've faced better teams and played at their level and barely lost except for that bullshit match where those dumbass italian refs gifted argentina an early goal. The players are fine mentally. We need better squads. 2014 squad was good enough to make quarters or semis but unfortunately we faced a great Netherlands in R32 and barely lost. What more can really be said about that one.
