ZICO INJURY ON THE EVE OF MUNDIALITO....... Gazeta Esportivo 20/12/1980...... - The greatest talent in the brazil team Zico, is out of tomorrow's friendly game with Switzerland and the upcoming Mundialito. Zico has a major muscle tear in his thigh. Sadness fell on the brazilian camp at the Toca da reposa yesterday.. The injury has put into perspective the slight problems with Socrates' achiles and serginho's bruises.. Dinner with the players was quiet and subdued as if they were trying to forget about the trauma zico is going through and his absence from the mundialito.. Zico's eyes were still red, not from pain but from his tears of disappointment... Players were interviewed and struggled to find words of comfort for zico.. Socrates said " its the kind of injury that is so unfair.. zico was going through a great physical and technical phase and then this.. Dr Neylor is right, it is the kind of insiduous injury that is unexpected and sudden".. Tita who has known zico for nine years said .." zico cried and me too, hey things were going well, there was a rapport building and the team had a balance. Zico would have been the star of the mundialito, the greatest figure at the tournament. Every nation would marvel at his talent. Brazil has lost its greatest brain and most experienced player.. but i am sure he is suffering more than us ".. Yesterday toca da raposa was saddened. All players were training as zico watched events from behind a window, his leg in ice.. He attended the press conference before flying back to rio de janeiro for further treatment.. " the trainer gilberto tim is not to blame" said zico " he did not push me hard in training..they say he pushes players beyond their physical capacity butt this is not true, this a reoccurance of the injury i felt in the rio championship" " i regret having to miss the mundialito, the stage was set. I felt me and socrates had a rapport that was something real and the goals were starting to emerge. But i want to be ready for the world cup qualifiers and i will be " " i've cried alot and i do not hide this .. to be plucked from the team so suddenly and so violently is cruel but i hope to travel with the team and offer my support. Brazil will still be well prepared for the mundialito without me and i will cheer from the sidelines " Cerezo said " we will dedicate our victory over switzerland in the next game to zico.. this is an unexpected problem for the team to lose such a player but we will overcome it " Reinaldo who has been going through a bad time recovering from injuries tried to talk to zico ... " i tried to say something but was unable to say anything ..i am so downcast and he also. I only hope we can both come back good soon "... Reinaldo the strong mulatto spoke like a frightened child, visibly shaken by his own misfortunes. A tear rolled down his cheek... Carlos Renato is the player that will replace zico... " i never wanted to get a place in the team under these circumstances, i never want to take the place of an injured comrade. Zico is a creator and a scorer and will be missed. TELÉ SANTANA INTERVIEW 21/07/1980.... This is an article and interview from july 1980.. Tele Santana is faithful. It is almost impossible for him to change his habits. He does not act like a man with great responsibility on his shoulders. His manners are simple and natural. He does not like interviews and seems terrified by microphones and tense in front of the cameras. He prefers Belo horizonte to Rio - less media and easier to relax. Its one of the reasons he moved brazils traditional training camp in rio to the taco da raposa of cruzeiro. Santana is wary of the spotlight in Rio and also wary of its media..but even the most hard nosed critics of Tele praise him for his loyalty, sincerity, honesty and dedication. Tele recognises he is not a politician and can at times seem rude and uncooperative. Which is understandable when he has to deal with a million questions from the press almost daily, but santana is also aware that this is just part of the job for a selecao coach.. In sao paulo since saturday - there were interviews outside the morumbi stadium on his arrival, there were interviews at half time in the match between sao paulo and santos and there were interviews at full time and more when he returned to his hotel.. Everyone wants to know his observations and his technical plans for the selecao..journalists want to know about Pita, Batata, serginho, ze sergio, and Renato.. " i will not speak about players specifically . I will not make comments on this or that player. Please understand i am doing observation work and any pronouncement can hurt a player. All the players mentioned by you are good people and good players and are being viewed carefully. The next squad i name i will call those who are in good form in my opinion " When the question arose of Falcao's transfer to Roma tele replied " it is not ideal when great players leave the country, but it would be unfair to begrudge a player his chance to succeed elsewhere ".. " personally i get on well with most of the journalists and i have good relationships with the club managers in brazil, but i hate the lies that i often read in the papers.. i was hurt by the news printed in the jornal do brasil saying that i didnt regard zico and socrates as selecao players and that they only played well for their clubs.. it is not true. They made up those words. But fortunately i ve spoken to both players and they are clever enough to realise the fabrication." Although it has not pleased the press in Rio, Santana has confirmed he intends to make the Taco da Raposa the official concentration and training camp for the selecao.. Santana again turns to the topic of overseas brazilian players..." i remain concerned by the transfer of brazilian players abroad, i have already given my opinion about it, but if a player is playing very well abroad he shall be selected regardless of the fact he is playing outside of brazil." Inter have Jair, flamengo have tita, fluminense have Robertinho..i really hope a specialist on the right emerges..like we have on the left with Ze sergio and Eder.." When asked if Cerezo, Batista, zico, socrates and falcao could play together, santana replied.." it depends on a few factors, i believe a team can be composed with great players even if some have to throw away their favoured position. DECISIVE DAYS FOR TELÉ & BRAZIL 12/12/1980 There is one friendly game left before Brazil travel to uruguay for the mundialito. Tele must decide on his squad. The game against switzerland will probably throw up more questions for tele. He knows his team is not yet defined and believes the next seven days will bring more problems and solutions. Holders and reserves will be decided... Toca da Raposa an intimate place for tele will be where he makes his choices for the switzerland game and the mundialito. The atmosphere is relaxed , the peace is enlightening . This environment according to tele gives rise to solutions. The players have also come to have a special effection for the place. The noise and disturbances of rio are now a thing of the past.. Four candidates for the team will be interviewed today.. four players that are the topic of debate in brazil - left back Pedrinho, centre back Edinho, left winger Eder and midfielder Isidoro... PEDRINHO ( palmeiras) - " I am left side and i admit that i have deficiencies to play on the right and be an option there. However this not mean i can not show good football and be an option or an alternative. All the players of the squad feel this way. The coach has faith in all of us " Edinho was the last name to be called by tele and therefore may not even get a place in the mundialito squad..but the defender ensures that training over the next few days will prevent his absence from the mundialito... EDINHO ( fluminense) - " i am going through a good phase and in really good condition. If i didnt have a chance of being in the team then tele would not have called me. He has reminded me of my merits and i will make it a difficult decision for him to leave me out. I can also play at left back if needed as i have done before.. I want a place in the squad and i want to play in uruguay. I will devote myself entirely." Another player on the fringes of the team is Eder... EDER ( Atletico Mineiro ) - " Ze Sergio is a great player and he is going through a great moment in his career. I know that he holds the position on the left but my time will come and i am fine with that . I am a professional and i accept that there is a great player ahead of me . I accept my reservation passively. but i will eventually get a place with my ability and effort " Considered a protegé of tele santana , paulo isidoro may not get a place in the mundialito squad.. " But do not bet on it" says the player himself.. ISIDORO (Gremio ) - " I still have an opportunity to show my best football to The coach. Santana knows my tactical importance and my ability as a team player. " .. For now all of those comments are theory and what happens over the next few days we will see who prevails. After the switzerland game there will be no more time to study, no room for errors and no indecision. Most would say that the mundialito is of no great importance but win or lose santana believes it is an opportunity for Brazil to restore their image as purveyors of the beautiful game...

Subs used: Isidoro, Serginho. .. brazil won this game easily but never seemed to get out of first gear. .. the loss of zico to injury obviously disrupted the balance of the team and his replacement Renato had a steady game without being overly impressive.. he won the penalty which socrates put away after 10 minutes. Despite dominating the match, Brazil could not find a second goal until Ze Sergio scored with a minute of the game remaining.. In this game Socrates was again used as the centre forward ( or false 9 ).. Edevaldo of fluminense at this stage had become Santana's prefered option at right back..
TELE SANTANA : " WE CAN MEASURE OUR PROGRESS AT THE MUNDIALITO " 23/ 12 / 1980 .... After the eight matches that Brazil have played under Tele Santana's command , the coach believes that the path he has taken can be considered positive - even after the last display against switzerland which the press and the players themselves described as uninspiring... " It is very difficult " said tele " to play against a team which has no desire to come out of defence , a team clearly demonstrating that their aim was damage limitation. Of course Brazil did not play too well but in my opinion we didnt deserve the boos that arose in the stadium. This does not help the players. Our opponents did not want to leave their own area, they retreated further and further back. They were worried especially after defeats to argentina and uruguay. They saw this 2 -0 defeat to brazil as something like a victory.. it was a positive result for them ".. " The physical training taken by Gilberto Tim at taco da raposa was meticulous but not excessive.. Tim will never push a player beyond its limits" " With respect to Reinaldo , he really is a great player and in my plans for the world cup qualifiers. At present he has a muscle strain , something natural to players who are training and playing. Zico also suffered a strain but a more serious one . Unfortunately this is the reality of life as a football player " " We need Reinaldo to get some complete rest and then Gilberto Tim will organise some special fitness training for him if the methods used with other players are unsuitable. One way or another Reinaldo has a lot of football to play with the selecao and i hope to have him. Just to avoid any rumours within the press i will say that reinaldo and zico will be replaced for the mundialito but they are certainties for the world cup qualifiers depending on injury and condition.." " i keep saying that i consider Reinaldo a normal professional fit for football, the strain should be viewed as coincidental. When he was younger his strong personality and ability helped him overcome terrible injuries. This moment for him is nothing like the unpleasant moments he has suffered throughout his career. I called Reinaldo and will call him again because i know his qualities and he will bring us many joys in the future. Every player of the squad believes in Reinaldo, that was blatantly obvious at the taco da raposa."... " For Zico the strain was terrible. Everybody knew how important he was for us. Besides his ability he along with Socrates and Oscar formed a trio of true leaders..everyone was counting on him at the mundialito" " At various times zico had told me how much he was looking forward to playing against maradona, a player we admire. This was the moment for him, he was in a great phase and now it is taken away from him ".. " Zico's injury shocked everyone and i admit that the squad was shot down. But i want to take him and Reinaldo to accompany the delegation at the mundialito. I want to keep all squad members united".. Santana then talks of his job as brazil coach ... " its not an excuse but the time i have to work with the players is not that great and this makes things more difficult. Tim works on the fitness and i work with the ball but our time is limited which can be frustrating..Injuries also play their part but my opinion is everything is going as well as i had hoped ... anybody who has followed my work will know which team i will select at the mundialito.." Tele does not mention names but Carlos, Edevaldo, junior, Oscar , luisinho, Batista, Cerezo, Socrates, Renato ,Tita and Ze Sergio will most likely be his prefered team.. I just finished watching that game vs Paraguay Friendly in 1980. I am not sure whether Paraguay was bad or was Brazil just that good. It seemed like Paraguay was giving Brazil a lot of room to operate offensively at times. I am not saying Brazil could not have played like that even if Paraguy applied pressure. In that game #11 on the left wing looked quite good, at least of the players i am not familiar with. Was he on the team in the 82 World Cup?
I think it was a bit of both - paraguay were poor and brazil were good ... The Number 11 Ze Sergio was considered one of the best players in brazil in the early 80s.. Of all the left wingers in brazil at the time Ze sergio and Eder were the best, but they were two very different players.. Ze Sergio was a great dribbler very nimble and fast.. Eder was the better crosser and passer and obviously had a much better shot and was excellent at free kicks.. In 1981 Ze Sergio suffered a bad knee injury and had an operation..he couldnt rediscover his form in time for the 1982 world cup so Santana decided not to select him.. Eder was in great form by this stage and brazil seemed to be a better team with Eder on the left.. but if not for injury Ze Sergio would have been in the 82 squad and more than likely Santana would have given game time to both he and Eder... .a few English clubs were interested in signing Ze Sergio.. i have a good amount of info on Ze Sergio which i will post later in the thread..
MUNDIALITO The mundialito or 'Gold cup ' tournament was held in Uruguay between the 30th of December 1980 and the 10th of January 1981.. the tournament was contested by previous world cup winners Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, west Germany and runners up in 1974 and 1978 Holland took the place of England who decided not to compete in the tournament.. The tournament marked the 50th anniversary of the world cup .. All games were to be played in Montevideo... The Mundialito was also seen as an act of propaganda by the military dictatorship that controlled Urugauay at the time..but i dont want to dwell on the political side to the tournament... Tele Santana selected an 18 man squad for the mundialito.. unable to call on zico or reinaldo because of injury these are the 18 players that santana took to Uruguay.... On the 7th of January 1981 Brazil would play West Germany , but their first match would be on the 4th of january against bitter rivals Argentina and the new star of world football Diego Maradona...
BATISTA INTERVIEW ON THE EVE OF THE MUNDIALITO TOURNAMENT ..... Batista can be considered an absolute holder of the defensive midfield position for tele santana's new look brazil team.. Long haired, skilled and aggressive Batista is gaining a leadership status in this brazilian team.. He lost his trusted midfield partner Falcao at Inter but still impresses with his ability to dominate the centre of the pitch.. covering the sides, winning possession and launching attacks , Batista won the full confidence of tele santana... Tele regards him as essential to his plans.. " Batista is the player who has managed to combine both a european and brazilian style of play , he is strong and has a great work ethic but can also be creative when the situation arises "... Batista talks about the selecao : " the midfield is composed of me cerezo and zico, it is a department that is working well.. we have played together many times and the rapport increases each game and in training..we were at the 78 world cup together . Of course there is the problem of distance due to regional championships and time together is limited. I am in rio grande sul, Cerezo is in minas gerais and Zico is in rio but when we meet the understanding is always there.. the match against paraguay caused much enthusiasm for the midfield. The midfield three worked very well together. Believe me - good results will come the more we work together " " i have defensive qualities, Cerezo also but he combines defence and attack perfectly and Zico is the creativity and scorer of the midfield . I think it is a complete midfield.. questions have been asked on what would happen if Falcao comes back into the squad.. Falcao and Cerezo have almost identical qualities and Tele would have to decide who plays out of the two.. they are both fantastic players " " if Falcao could be called and had trained with us from the beginning it would be a difficult choice but Tele at this moment can not think about him because he has left Brazil and it is very difficult to integrate players who play abroad ".. " i respect the philosophy of tele santana..we have a good chance to show this philosophy at the mundialito.. " " i know the europeans apply themselves fully to fitness and endurance and have tried and get an advantage over us in this way but our fitness levels are now just as important as our technique... we can compete with europeans physically no problem.. added to this brazilian football still has more technique and is more rhythmic with more emphasis on creativity " " there are so many talented players in brazil that no player should feel disappointment in being left out of the team.. we are in this together as a group..even the players that didnt make the squad this time can still play their way in .. if the coach decides to replace me with another then that player has my full support.." Batista was a better player than Elzo.. Elzo only won 11 caps and it was a surprise when he was selected ...
Yes, Elzo only made the squad because Cerezo was injured, he got the starter role after Falcao disappointed.
SERGINHO : CENTRE FORWARD AT THE MUNDIALITO ?.... 3/1/1981 .. When Serginho felt a strong pain in his thigh muscle at the selecao's toca da raposa training camp he joined socrates on the players injured list...Santana now has to decide who will lead the attack against Argentina in tomorrow's game.. Serginho's attitude has impressed Tele Santana. He has been devoting himself entirely to improving his game in training and trying his best to restore his image which has been shattered by his indiscipline and short temper.. Serginho has settled well in the brazilian squad.. he is liked by all and has been forcing his way into Santana's plans. Indeed Serginho has been the first player on the training pitch and the last to leave it... Serginho has struck up close friendships with his two rivals for the centre forward position - Reinaldo and Socrates.. the controversial moments that have tainted his career, now seem to be a thing of the past.. When Serginho came on to play some minutes against Switzerland he showed a good understanding with Renato and Ze Sergio, his club colleagues at Sao Paulo. He was hoping to get other opportunities during the mundialito.. Despite suffering his thigh strain Serginho has traveled to Uruguay as a member of the brazil squad.. After time off from training Serginho has trained intensely for the last couple of days here in Los aromos, Montevideo..Santana believes he has recovered enough to be called on and now trusts that Serginho's aggressive nature is under control.. ...Socrates returned to training only yesterday after missing four days with a badly bruised knee.. the injury occured after a strong challenge by Juninho at the toca da raposa.. so who will play as forward against Argentina ? .. If both players are deemed fit then what will Santana do ?....Serginho - strong, powerful and a rapport with Ze Sergio and Renato. Or the ability of Socrates ?.. Moments before the training session yesterday, Santana let slip that Serginho might be his prefered choice up front.. santana talked of serginho's physical presence and also the fact that he has trained more intensely than Socrates .. Apparently Santana see's Socrates as a wonderful option coming on in the game from the bench.. ..But yesterday yet again Santana's plans were thrown into the air....Socrates trained and felt no problem in his knee but Serginho collapsed raising his hand and clutching his left thigh..he was attended to immediately by doctor Neylor Lasmar... This was not a reoccurance of serginho's previous injury but a terrible bout of sciatica that came completely out of the blue.. Half an hour later Doctor Lasmar announced that serginho would not have time to recover for the Argentina game. Santana now surely has to play with an out of condition Socrates up front... Tele, it must be said, has been very unlucky with injuries - he has no Zico or Reinaldo, a half fit socrates and there is no guarantee that Batista will be fit enough to start tomorrows game because of an abdominal strain.. Socrates said last night that he felt a deep sympathy for serginho and wishes him a quick recovery.. Santana echoed Socrates' thoughts - " Serginho didnt deserve to suffer this injury, he had been working hard and training well, but as with Reinaldo and Zico he is still part of my plans for the future " ( oh dear ...)
ARGENTINA TAUNT BRAZIL BEFORE MUNDIALITO ... 03/01/1981 ... The day before Brazil face Argentina in the mundialito, argentinian fans have arrived in Montevideo in a boisterous mood.. parading their flags and banners in the streets they were not content to just show their support and confidence in their team, they had to seek out brazilian fans who they taunted by proclaiming that argentina would not be leaving uruguay without the trophy.. In the press some argentinian players had dismissed Brazil as a 'spent force ' and the fans echoed these sentiments.. Argentinian fans entered the city's restaurants and bars draped in their flags. They sang loudly and wildly and proceeded to pull down and destroy any brazil flag they came across.. In their minds Argentina are superior and as world champion they feel they have the right to brag.. they are totally convinced that they will beat brazil... The behaviour of the argentinian fans has caused many neutral uruguayans to take the side of brazil.. indeed many uruguayan fans have stood side by side with brazilians on the streets in the face of argentinian intimidation.. The brazilian fans have arrived in montevideo in much smaller numbers than the argentines.. the uruguayans have welcomed them with open arms. The avenues that lead to the Centanario stadium in montevideo where brazil will play argentina tomorrow are now adorned with brazil and uruguayan flags and stalls selling the club shirts of teams from both nations... Tomorrow we will see if Argentina's boasting and claims of superiority are justified....
BRAZIL 1 ARGENTINA 1 Mundialito , 04/01/1981 Centanario stadium, montevideo, BRAZIL: Carlos, Edevaldo, Oscar, Luisinho, Junior, Batista, Cerezo, Tita, Renato, Ze Sergio, Socrates. Subs used: Joao Leite, Paulo Isidoro. ... A draw with the taste of victory for brazil. Three days prior to this game Argentina had defeated West Germany 2 - 1 .. another victory against brazil would mean that argentina would progress to the final as group winners.. so Santana's team would face a real test in their first game of the mundialito against their bitter rivals argentina and the young superstar Diego Maradona.. The game was fairly even, maradona showing glimpses of his immense talent .. brazil had claims for a penalty when olguin looked to have fouled Ze sergio but nothing was given.. after half an hour Maradona shrugged Batista aside ( Batista claiming he was fouled ) and cut in from the right making his way round Oscar before shooting low and beating Carlos at his near post.. carlos got a hand to the ball but couldnt keep it out... Brazil then started to create chances but the game remained 1 - 0 to argentina at half time.. Two minutes into the second half brazil were level. Edevaldo scoring with a nice shot after argentina failed to properly clear a corner. After this , both teams created scoring opportunities.. Socrates playing as the centre forward had a goal dissallowed.. there were many fouls and pushes during the game as one might expect..things got heated.. Isidoro and maradona apparently had words in the tunnel after the game. There were scuffles on the pitch But the austrian referee Linemayr chose not to show a red card to anyone.. the game ended 1 - 1..
