First off. let me just say I am excited that Jacksonville is getting a professional team. Have grown up in the South, Jacksonville has long been one of my favorite places. The city doesn't spring off the tongues like New Orleans, Nashville, and Atlanta but it's full of life and adventure. A very underrated city, IMO. Here are a coupe of names to throw out there for shits and giggles: Jacksonville Atlantics S.C. -- name is pretty self explanatory considering the Atlantic is close Port Jacksonville F.C. or Jacksonville Porters F.C - paying homage to the Port of Jacksonville Jacksonville Wreckers S.C. - a salute to the famous Maple Leaf shipwreck in St. John's River Jacksonville Suns S.C.. - respecting the sun on the City's flag as well as a head nod to the Sunshine State **I submitted all these names to the club's "name the team" contest on their website**
Well the baseball team is of course, the Jacksonville Suns, so I don't see that happening. Honestly though, I'd never heard of the Maple Leaf sinking so I googled it. For others that want more info, here's the wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maple_Leaf_(shipwreck) Alas, I couldn't see any name paying homage to that either, considering it was a Union ship.
Damn. I didn't know that. Well, that one goes out the window. I saw something a long time along on the History or Discovery Channel about the Civil War and the Maple Leaf came up and it stuck with me for some reason. It may be because it was the first vessel, I think, struck by a torpedo in US history. But yeah, considering it was Union associated it might not fly. Although, I'm sure there probably has been a fair number of shipwrecks off the coast which in turn could make the name applicable.

I really like this idea. Wanderers is used in so many parts of the world (S. America, Europe and Africa). A good portion of the JAX population have come from other places. I also like the colors Navy blue and gold. Definately not into gimicky nick names - they did the WIZ, BURN, CLASH in MLS. PLEASE stay away from that silliness. JACKSONVILLE WANDERERS !
It's not the SC that I feel mimics Orlando . . . I'm all for SC over FC. I'm all for the team ending up as "SC." It's the "City" part since Orlando is just 3 hours south.
Works for me . . . Once we start pounding on everybody on a weekly basis that's what we'll be known as anyways.
The name the team contest is over. I wrote in Wanderers in the survey that is now available on the team website. I only liked a few of the name options on the survey - Admirals, Armada, and the write in option. They had some bad names like, Bold, Breakers, Generals & many more...I suggest if you want to influence the name you go through the survey.
Admirals or Armada are the obvious good matches. Interesting the team logo is Andrew Jackson on a horse, so maybe the team is hinting to use Generals. Why "First Coast", or what is that name derived from, say as opposed to Sun Coast ? With such a log city name, really thing a shorter name would roll better. - Navy is big, is there much Air Force presence in town? - The Armanda logo could have a stylized set of ships- air craft carrier with a plane taking off, , battleship with its guns framing the logo, or some other ship logo cutting through heavy seas. (man, i wish I knew how to put art on sites like this)
St. Augustine, which is just south of us, is the nation's oldest city so that is why we refer to ourselves as the First Coast. We do not have an Air Force presence, though our Naval Air Station states that it is the "birthplace" of the Blue Angels. I think our aviation presence is mostly Anti-Submarine warfare. I wish there was an easy nickname for sub-hunters, that would be unique. I gotta say I hate the Generals name because that reminds me of the team the Harlem Globetrotters would constantly beat.
Admirals over Generals for sure. Team said at the fan forum that they were down to about 6 names. All from the survey. So that should give you some idea what they are debating. It should be announced in February. Steve Livingstone said they have to make a marketing/brand plan for each name and then decide from there.
I agree that this City thing is getting overblown. Somebody was even suggesting in the Miami MLS expansion forums that the Miami team be called Miami City FC. It would look just boring and generic if all the teams in Florida were Orlando City, Miami City, Jacksonville City and Tampa City.
