Supposedly my great uncle, Griffith Jones, was a music supervisor helping with the Welsh choral work in that movie. At least that's what my dad told us. He was the choral director for the Cleveland Orchestra at the time. I shed a tear or two every time the Welsh National Anthem is sung at a match.

When it comes to westerns, I will always be a sucker for Leone and Once Upon a Time in the West. Morricone plays a big role in that.

I didn't say he sang TM; I said they wanted him to.

And that Pony song is just awful, but I'm sure the boppers swooned. I'm sure Ozzie approved.

No. He'd rather drive a truck.

And I'd rather get hit by one than listen to him sing.

I would rank the five greatest westerns ever as:
    1. Rio Bravo
    2. Once Upon a Time In the West
    3. McCabe & Mrs Miller
    4. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
    5. Winchester '73
NB: I intentionally only included one film per director.

While we are at it, can we say the original 3:10 to Yuma with Glen Ford and Van Heflin should have never been remade?

Probably the greatest translation of German Expressionist film into the western genre.

Didn’t expect to see Winchester ‘73 up there but more nice call.

Since I have little time for Altman, coupled with your exclusion of Peckinpah, I’ll just add a five favorites of mine which is admittedly different than greatest...

    1. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    2. Rio Bravo
    3. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
    4. Forty Guns
    5. Johnny Guitar

Gotta love the Anthony Mann westerns simply because they explore a completely different mythological 'West' than the Ford/Hawks films and their derivatives do.

Checking to see if The Crew marketing team has done anything buzz worthy...
Nope. Ok then. My favorite Western is Paint Your Wagon. Early Eastwood classic.

I just realized this comment is slightly unfair. I LOVED (and own the Criterion blu ray of) THREE WOMEN. And I also find The Long Goodbye enjoyable.

    The rest...like I said, I tried....

I just have one question before I go have Italian casserole for lunch with my work team:

Why is Back to the Future Part III not on any of these lists?

It's very good. But as far as "modern" westerns go nothing for me beats The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

I'm woefully unprepared to talk westerns with you guys. Though interestingly, just two days ago I suggested to the missus that we watch several of the films that have been referenced here. By her reaction, I think I may be doing that solo.

Speaking of modern westerns, anyone seen Deadwood: The Movie on HBO?

You don't shoot a man in the back unless you are the coward who shot poor Jessie in the back!

I wasn't impressed with The Assasination of Jesse James. The Yogi bear version is hilarious though.

I didn't watch the Deadwood tv show and the movie didn't seem that interesting. Scriptwriters seemed to make everyone overly verbose.

Well, you either watched the series for the dialog (the sacred and the profane) or it totally turned you off. It's Shakespearean at times (a common comparison made by critics). Profanity off the charts, but the dialog is simply remarkable.

Is this promo a normal promo? If so, great. If not, very good new overlords.

I believe they are doing same thing at Columbus Zoo. Bring a backpack stuffed with supplies and get in free. Great idea.
