Did Blank pay for the stadium? Yes he's a billionaire (4.5 billion I believe), but the stadium cost 1.5 billion. If he had help, maybe just maybe he would entertain building one for the United.
Given Atlanta's attendance levels, I just don't see it. And building a big enough stadium from scratch doesn't make sense. I guess if it were available, it's possibly they could re-retrofit Turner Field back to it's Olympic bowl from a baseball diamond now that the Braves have left town. - But I don't see that happening. Unless their attendance crashes in the next few years, and the trajectory is currently 53k and climbing.
It was originally every 3 years in Portland, but after the first round of that, the ownership saw how worn down it got, and renegotiated their deal with the city (the stadium owners) to get it replaced every 2 years.
The first time was after three seasons, but it has not lasted more than two seasons since. I was replaced in 2014, 2016, 2018, and is scheduled to be replaced before he start of the 2019 season due to the construction. https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/03/portland_timbers_and_city_rene.html The city was supposed to ensure a fifa 2 star field and that money came out of the seat tax. The original projection was that the 2011 install would last 8 years, but that proves not true anywhere. Fortunately, the city seat tax is higher than projected since the Timbers always sell out. The city wanted a more predictable arrangement, ( they were afraid they would have to fund replacement with debt some years) so in 2014 the Timbers took over replacement in return for some of what would be the increased seat tax revenue, mostly from this addition. The Timbers get mor money, the city is happy without the risk of years when seat tax revenue might not cover the cost of new Turf. The city charter doesn’t allow deficit spending.
2011 roof is gone. Seating sections taking shape. I spy with my little eye... 👀 #RCTID #BAONPDX pic.twitter.com/XxT87SjPgs— Providence Park PDX (@ProvidencePark_) December 17, 2018
So.. Since we know that adding a second deck to just one side won't be enough to feed the demand in Portland, when is the other side going up?
The field will be returfed once the heavy equipment is off the field. Paulson seems to want this to be the last turf install, but, as mentioned in previous posts, there are other ducks that need to get lined up before that can happen.
Since all the folks that wander through this thread seem to be concerned only with when/whether there will be grass, and given that this is a stadium porn thread (which was started on account of the huge addition that they've been working on for two seasons), perhaps someone with the skills can post a mock-up of what the stadium would look like with grass? Maybe that would appease some people.
It will be green, except when the mud prevails, just like other pitches. If a football team also players there, it will be bumpy and late season game will be crap. Ask the folks in Houston.
With the addition of the seats and roof. Looks like seats in section 201 (maybe some in 202) will be obstructed.
Yeah, you might have to stand up to see the corner flag But you probably do now. The new seating is entirely behind the current East site seating. It’s not over it. http://providencepark.io-media.com/
These virtual viewers always pan the opposite as I think they should and I about make myself throw up. I think of it as scrolling/panning on an image and they work like you are in the seat turning your head. I just don't think that way when I see an image on a computer screen. They are also super fast/quick. A tiny move of the mouse sends them flying. Anyway, I am sure nobody cares, but it always takes me a minute to slow down and get it right.
Wonder if they could raise the scoreboard high up onto that sports club wall and (more easily?) expand seating behind that goal?
Been stated by MP it hasn't been worth the return on investment. Also, there's the issue with ensuring that the road for vehicles into the stadium grounds is open and clear as well as getting permission in that area as it is on an easement.
MP tweeted oct 11 they are looking into a larger screen. He didn’t say where it would go. No discussion about added seating then.
He also said in that tweet storm that they are trying to do some upgrades to the West side in the concourse and to add an exit on that side.
Can't remember if this was posted. So here I go anyway. https://www.oregon.gov/osbeels/abou...018 Symposium - PROVIDENCE PARK EXPANSION.pdf A detailed look at the structure itself. With some decent photos of the work from last off-season.
Amazing stuff. I particularly found it interesting that in their model they had mock ups of the new press blocks buildings going up on the old Oregonian building sites.
