EXCELLENT! He was the beat writer for the Comets back in the 80's, so he knows soccer. I was wondering if they would consider him. Now if they would only bring back Kevin Wall to help with the TV broadcasts.........

(For those too young to remember, Kevin Wall was the radio broadcaster for the Comets. He did an excellent job and should be considered if they are looking for a new color guy/second PBP guy with Wheelock).

So the Star did the ol' piss on the higher paid incumbant in the job and replace him with someone else willing to do it for less. Didn't realize that beat writing was like Sales floor loyalty.

Seriously I know nothing about the new guy and he may turn out to be a better writer, but you have to believe times are tough at the Star and some re-evaluation of talent needed to happen to stay afloat. Looks like this guy just got to pick up some of Luders responsibilites. I wonder what their actual circulation is anymore compared to 10-15 years ago. That durned internet thingy. The game has moved on them and that business model.

It has, and they've failed to keep up with it, which is why they're struggling now.

You gotta feel for Luder. Hopefully for us he'll end up somewhere that he can keep writing about the Wizards.

Well, when David Ficklin and I talked to him after the Toronto game at Dave&Buster's, he was saying that he may have come out on the good end because they were going to just pile the duties of those let go on the ones left behind...

Sounds like my former employer. The peons end up being overworked and underpaid.

    Re: Wizards Blog Updates

I am glad you said that. I did not know he had covered soccer before.

I do not think it is a case of someone doing it for less money. Ihave no idea who made how much at the Star, but Covitz has been around a while. Like a lot of businesses, they are trying to do the same with less. What they usually end up doing is less with less.

Then the customers go elsewhere, then the company does less. Then, well I think we all know how that goes.

And yes that business model is outdated, the real question is what business model will work going forward. Can newspapers, local news stations and radio all reduce to the point where they are breaking even?

Or will blogs put them all out of business? And if they do, will the people doing the blogs be able to afford to eat?

Marinelli and Onalfo arguing? Marinelli leaving practice early? Yikes.

It's amazing how getting just the tiniest bits of between game reporting can help. Thanks Thad.

No kidding. You will never see this on TV or in the Star. Good stuff.
