Some more good stories in this article. https://www.sounderatheart.com/2018...d-american-soccer-god-passes-away-mls-coach#1 "This is what heaven must be like. In my imagination of heaven, this is it. Packed house, beating Portland by 3. Fans going crazy, it can't get better than that."
I think if the ISA ever puts a name on the Supporters Shield it'll be someone instrumental to the MLS supporter culture like Sam Pierron, Monty Rodrigues, Matt Mathai, and so on.
Arena-Schmid Trophy for the SS would sound beautiful and contrasts nicely with the Anthony Precourt Wooden Spoon.
Perhaps. But I was suggesting it because I thought the Supporters' Shield was developed and promoted by these individuals to recognize clubs that had the best regular season record. And, as Sigi Schmid has passed with the current win record in MLS history, I thought it somewhat fitting. Anyway, that is up to others. Any change or no change would be better than "insert corporate name" Supporters' Shield.
Pretty sure he is. Corner of the Galaxy mentioned he was elected into it twice: once for his AYSO days and once for his coaching.
Well, maybe 1%. MLS might do something stupid and sell a sponsorship for a trophy they don't own (Salt Lake did it for the Rocky Mountain Cup)
Sigi won 3 Supporter's Shields but won two MLS Cups in the process. Knowing how determined Sigi was as a coach, I don't think he cared about the SS as much as the MLS Cup. For myself, other than making the CCL which is no where near making the UEFA CL or EL, I really don't see the big deal of the SS.Maybe if the CCL becomes more important for MLS clubs, it may matter more.
There are few people who have done more to build American soccer to where it is today than Sigi Schmid. His passing is truly a loss to the game. I didn't know and didn't ever meet him, but I do think it's telling how quickly and easily all of the anecdotes and stories flow from players, fellow coaches, writers, all the way down to random folks, about what a great person he was. Nobody speaks ill of the dead, but at the same time, some wakes are better attended and warmer and more lively than others. Rest in peace.

In reading up on him the last few weeks, you know what hurts the most - that he was by all accounts a great person! The world needs more Sigi Schmids, not less. RIP Sigi, and a sincere thanks for all you did to grow the sport here. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

Check out @kbaxter11’s Tweet: The several hundred who turned out for Sigi Schmid’s memorial Mass included six USMNT coaches, @MLS commissioner Don Garner, several Hall of Famer and World Cup players, his former UCLA player and ex-UCLA and NFL coach Terry Donahue Wow!— Kevin Baxter 🇺🇦🏳️🌈 (@kbaxter11) January 19, 2019
I've seen the tweet in too many places and retweeted too many times. It has been driving me crazier than normal.
Sigi's Memorial Service on Livestream. Long but worth it. The eulogies start about halfway through. Alejandro Moreno at 2:35 holds it together but it's a struggle. I apologize if this is too much on the subject but I just have to post this. As mentioned, on September 29 a brave Crew employee, literally risking her job, invited the 2008 team back to the stadium for a halftime ceremony. The soulless bastards who were running the team tried to keep it brief and hustle them off the field but they refused to go and instead headed over to the Nordecke for high fives, hugs and handshakes. Very few people knew how sick Sigi was - he would be dead less than three months later. One man who did know was longtime team physician - and now team co-owner - Dr. Pete Edwards, who insisted that Sigi stay with him and his family so that he could "keep an eye on him". Very few people knew how ill Sigi truly was, and that's the way he wanted it. So we didn't know that this was goodbye. But Sigi knew.
I know how difficult it is to be around someone with a bad heart as lost my dad several years ago. I'm sure Sigi always had the best doctors and care at his disposal but sadly when your time is up there is nothing that can be done. He was just too young to die. RIP!
