MLS expansion: Will four viable bids even emerge on road to 28? the simple answer is - YES- i count sacramento, tampa bay, san antonio, phoenix, and cincinatti that will be in the immediate mix for #25-26 by the end of 2017 #27-28 contenders for 2018-2019 will be any city left over from these 2 above spots plus nashville and another city or 2 that will have its stuff together to be a serious contender, such as san diego depending on the referendum in november, 2018, and st lou that somehow will have to find the $60 mill to get back in the race after 2022, i think there will be a push for #29-30- the franchise money will be just too enticing not to do it
Good. I wouldn't be in favor of stopping the game JUST to look at a potential card for a dive. But if you're already looking at a potential penalty or red card situation, and you see a dive as a part of that review... absolutely. Break out the yellow.
Why go beyond 24? Once you get past that number, you start having troubled franchises that are constantly threatening to move. And from an MLS point of view, 24 fits perfectly with the 34-game schedule - two conferences of 12 teams, play conference opponents twice and noon-conference once. Once you get past that number, suddenly you have to go to some NFL schedule where fans won't see certain players at all in some years. Move the Crew to Cincinnati, maybe add a Florida team and stop.
There's already two teams set for Florida, two in Texas and three in California. I'd rather see the league continue to spread out in the US and maybe one more in Canada.
There are no more cities of significant size in Canada. There are two more markets each in California, Texas, and Florida larger than anything in Canada. (Not counting Miami.)

Making me spill my beer I'm laughing so hard Bill. Also, what other city in Canada could have any possible appeal for MLS?
I don't think MLS will get another Canadian City with the Canadian Premier League idea that has been floating around. A year ago, the CSA wanted to keep the three MLS teams in MLS and bolster a national league with teams in the other cities. They liked the stability MLS provided while they tried to establish a national league. The next biggest markets would be Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Quebec City. I don't know if any of those cities are MLS ready. A big problem will be weather early in the season.
The only chance of a fourth Canadian team would be a second team in Toronto/Mississuaga/Golden Horseshoe. But since the NHL hasn't yet figured out how to appease the Leafs and do that, I'm not holding my breath with MLS. And given how weird MLS Cup was last year with the paucity of presence of the league corporate sponsors - many with limited presence in Canada - tells me the hurdles of a fourth potential Canadian team are pretty much insurmountable.

I mentioned that it would be great if Cincinnati ever got a team when Beckham signed a decade ago(I was born near Cincy) and was told "No operator investor and Ohio already has a team" so now four or five in Cali, three in Texas and three in Florida is acceptable. I'm not calling for a 4th team in Canada, to hell with those southern pussies, I was just saying I'd rather have a 4th in Canada before more in those other three states.
City limit population, which is what this list shows at least for the U.S., is pretty well useless. Cities have fairly arbitrary boundaries that don't really reflect how people live. It is also biased toward newer cities especially in the SunBelt that were able to push their boundaries out a long way because there weren't any other cities in the way. I used to live within the city limits of Houston but I was 27 air miles from downtown. It would be hard to find a city in the Midwest or Northeast where that would be true. CSA, MSA, or Nielsen TV market area rankings are much more useful but even then it is hard to compare the U.S. and Canada since different definitions are used.
