Why did Timbers cut ties with Fernandez? He entered substance abuse program but no indication in the article. Didn’t they pay like $10M for him? How does that work out?
My guess is he’s not complying with the program. And he’s expressed desires to leave MLS. As for how it works out, poorly evidently. Thx, Jay!
USSF sanctioning a second D1 womens league would be more than a little ironic, and might drive Rocca Commiso stark raving nuts.
But I worry it muddied the waters for the women's game in the states. The last thing we need is to have a MLS-vs-NASL style family squabble thinning the viewer and financier resource pool to where neither league survives.
Reportedly (based on what I saw on social media last night from various reporters) he didn't follow the substance abuse program once he checked out, apparently having drinks somewhere, which is what lead to his dismissal. I'm still wondering how that works when it comes to Portland's DP slots, salary cap, etc. for 2020.
Wouldn’t MLS be better off to transfer him out of the league? Terminating his contract forfeits the transfer fee they paid Necaxa does it not? Drinking some beers may violate MLS rules. It sorely it’s no reason to forfeit $10M. Or they found someone they want to sign and needed an excuse to send him packing. There’s more to this story.
There is more to the story because apparently MLS is filing suit against Necaxa. I've speculated elsewhere that there may be behavioral type issues (worse drug use or something) that MLS/Timbers specifically asked about knowing the player's history that Necaxa lied about or didn't disclose.
Unless Necaxa put it in writing, (and why would they), MLS won't have much of a case. Fernandez surely received a physical when he reported to Portland. If he lied about his past drug use to the team doctors, that doesn't implicate Necaxa.
