Their goals are realistic though. I know they were looking at an NPSL team cause they thought it could be semi-pro but then something changed.

I think there's a pretty big gap between NPSL/PDL and a professional team, but like I said I'd support the heck out of whatever they decide to do.

The group is promising an announcement of some sort on the 18th. They put out a tweet today.

I would guess it's a name and stadium announcement, although the timing is a bit odd.

Frankly I'm surprised it's taken them this long. They were promising something much earlier initially.

Well, you can stretch all that (mostly) hot air social media instagramming etc. only so far... :whistling:

Not much of substance so far + the whole overall NASL situation certainly isn't helping either.

Best case: stadium, location, name, logo and uni's, + that they'll play in whatever best league they can get into and that is still around in 2018.

Found the definition (in the urban dictionary of all places). Very interesting.

The fact it needs an explanation means it has little/no value as a brand... Most people, myself included will have no clue what it means.

But I'll give them points for at least finding a way to have SDFC in the name without having it in the name.

Yea, I think that everyone who doesn’t get it and has to look at wiki for what it means is part of the appeal for me.

You'll be one of the few. And if they're goal is to limit appeal... They're succeeding. Just told my cousin and my wife the name... Both asked "what happened in 1904?"

And when I explained one just sat slack jawed before shaking his head and walking away. My wife was more direct and said, "yeah...no." I doubt they're alone in that reaction.

San Diego 1904 is just a step above Columbus Xoggz and the Macon Whoopie when it comes to taking naming seriously.

Both those teams are long dead, by the way.

Wonder if they chose that due to they're really being the O-Side (1519) FC and not wanting to anger the locals when they move up that way later next year?

"Meh" name, IMO, but sure beats another "insert name" FC or United (lookin at U, California United)

Reno 1864 has done alright with their name, so there's that......

You shouldn't... it's not a good sign. I'm not that old. And if I'm saying WTF... you can bet people older than me in their 40's, 50's, etc... won't find the name appealing either. If their goal is to garner only a fan base consisting of 20 somethings with certain urban knowledge, they might be on to something. But good luck with that business plan.

Worst part... unlike what 30King asserts, it's really just an obscure way to say San Diego FC.

Yea its a different name for sure but I think it will grow on people. The apparent fact that "no one knows what 1904 means" actually is a good thing I think. When folks hear what the team name really does mean it will stick with them. I actually know quite a few people who know exactly what 1904 means. It was on the voting lists for SoccerCity before FootyMcFootyFace ran away with it.

Didn't Houston pick a date for their original name that pissed off some Latino groups.

I mean now in days a team called 1776 FC would piss off lots of people.

That's the point... 1904 is not a date at all. But most people aren't going to get that.

He isn't old so he'll be around for another 5-10 years if the UT keeps him (and they stay in business).
