Bora's team won 4-0 on Saturday to advance to the Group of Death. But he is probably still on the hot seat.

He probably got fired for kicking the "team captain" off the team and then bringing in a frenchman to play left back.........oh wait.......maybe we shouldve fired him around the same time 8 years ago.

Chias USa's already got a coach. Hans Westerhof's protege, some other dutchman. Can't remember the name.

Now this is a damn shame. Tell me you weren't dying to see the Arena/Sampson STEEL CAGE MATCH FROM HELL in the Hex.

Maybe Jamaica will hire him, out of gratitude for 1997.

Hex, nothing...I was looking forward to the Steve/Bora Texas Death Match in the semis...

The Tico federation just has no sense of marketing...

    Re: Sampson fired

Bora is still there, how could i forget? even if he played badly up to the qualifiers, once there his team beat their opponents quite handily, especially if compared to other CONCACAF teams not named Mexico...His salary though, has always been a hot issue... My guess is he remains until his team is in trouble or manages a very poor performance in a qualifying game

Damn. I was counting on easy points vs. a demoralized, poorly coached Tico squad.

Maybe this belongs in Americans Abroad, but I just read that Sampson has been fired in Costa Rica.

I guess they didn't like sneaking through on the "away goal" tie breaker...

If the USSF had any balls back in the spring of 1998, they would have fired Sampson after he threw Harkes (captain for life) off the national team. Hey, let's employ a 3-6-1 formation! What a fvckin' brillant idea! The man is a moron - why do you think it took him about 4 years to get his next coaching job after the debacle in WC 98?! Hell, UCLA didn't even hire him for their vacant coaching position a few years ago!

it's the top story on concacaf's site currently.

actually, cuba is better than a lot of people know. my understanding is that they have kept the same players together playing various friendlies for 2 years or so and have put some money into the program. they are improving just like the u.s. did when they kept the same players together in the early 90's so that they learned to play together as a team.

sampson's bad luck to be the first to be bitten by them (i know he still made it thru), but there will be others. when cuba decides to concentrate on a sport their athletic prowess and their belief in the importance of sports historically brings them thru.

It's too bad. I was really looking forward both to booing Sampson's ass off when he came to the US, and to our first guaranteed 3 points in the Saprissa. Of course, they're still not a sure thing to make it thru the Group of Death, but they've just instantly improved from "damn lucky to make it to the semifinals" to "solid favorite to qualify for Germany".

    good for costa rica.

    sampson is an ass.

maybe if he isolated the costa rican players in the hills somewhere before their games they would've done better....

Oh please - MLS does not need another Bob Gansler! There is enough boring soccer being played in MLS!

You mean MLS Cup winning Bob Gansler? A far sight more than any Metro coach has ever done.

Depends... the current Metros coach has indeed won MLS Cup... he just did it with a different team. :)

Ok back to Sampson, this doesn't suprise me at all. Somehow I never expected him to make it through the qualifying rounds still in charge.
