My opinion: Pass. He's a relegation specialist. He's never really shown ability to actually advance a team beyond mere survival. In my opinion, he's one of that group of English coaches who just hop from one failing club to another, never really accomplishing anything, but are celebrated and become relevant for doing nothing but achieving the bare minimum as a Premier League manager. He's like that weird creepy guy who lives in the woods. His survival tips will keep you alive if you're lost in the wilderness, but that doesn't mean you should go to him for life advice.
Eh, 4 straight seasons managing a relatively small club to 8th or better finishes in the PL plus an appearance in Europe (after leading that same club to promotion). I'm not advocating for the guy, but the above statement simply isn't true.
He's shown zero commitment in his career to find a partner for Michael Bradley. I'll pass since that's the way forward.
I know this is merely a rumor about Allardyce being interested in the position, but even if you were to entertain the idea of him being hired, this is a perfect example of why the powers that be need to be patient and not rush to hire anyone. He's certainly a capable coach, but there are two big reasons not to seriously consider Allardyce: everyone knows at this point that he's crooked, and hiring a middle-of-the-road English manager sends the wrong message. I think this is a great opportunity for the U.S. to be creative and aim high. Allardyce probably would've been good in the role Arena filled trying to stabilize things and get one specific squad to the World Cup. However, I don't necessarily see someone like him as the guy to re-energize things like people want. There's a lot of time before the national team plays matches that count toward something, so be patient, name an interim manager, figure out what you want/need to accomplish during this "dead" period, and then once you've figured that out then ID full-time candidates.
The US needs a coach that can a) repair the US defensively (which is what actually cost the US points in the Hex) and b) brings enough credibility/gravitas to get the type of effort and commitment psychologically from the players the US used to be overflowing with by default. Big Sam could do a but I'm not sure he could do b.
Must be a slow news day...only ESPN would float a lousy rumor for this journeyman coach. The old boy network never knew a better candidate.
It's scary because the USSF top guy like Gulati does not know to evaluate talent coach and I'm pretty sure the guy don't even know much about soccer as well.
As if Lletget weren't disheartened enough by the U.S. missing the World Cup. Sounds like a great idea. What we need to make up for a manager from America who let the team get too old and stagnant...is one who is the poster child for it in Europe.
It's ridiculous to float "rumors" about this or that candidate being in the loop when Gulati is still at the helm. The new President has to select the permanent replacement for Arena.
I'd forgotten about his time with Bolton. He wasn't completely terrible with West Ham, too. I still think he's not a good candidate. I should've re-worded the title of this thread - the article is more that Allardyce is interested, not that he's being considered. His agents may be just trying to float his name for open positions. Though I wonder why he wouldn't be interested in Scotland. Doesn't like the weather?
It makes sense, however, the guy hasn't called it quits yet so there's a chance he'd be reelected as a President for another term and that's why I'm worry about as a fan.
I don't think the uss brass is going to empower him to offer another long-term contract after he biffed the last 2. At least that's true until he's reelected. Cross that bridge when we come to it. If they have sense they shouldn't care about his cases that he's involved with bidding for a future Cup and has made some tv deals that were more favorable than before. Not like he created the infrastructure of the United States itself and is responsible for the expansion of media options this century.
I would be for it. The guy knows how to organize and motivate. Guardiola isn't walking through the door. We need, maybe for the first time ever, a clearly competent manager. I'd take Allardyce over any current MLS manager. People will say Martino. Well, ok, I guess. And, what foreign manager is going to come? If we could get Martinez, that would be good. There was an article that said Blanc was interested. That would be fine, too. Bielsa? Great. Hiddink might be too old. But, I'd be fine with us getting Allardyce.
Pass. Want a smart, young, savvy, creative coach, outside the box. Weird rumor because this would create zero positive buzz.
