http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11800769^28477,00.html afl melbourne player Troy Broadbridge, age 24, missing while on his honeymoon. very sad, my prayers out to him, his wife, family and everyone else.
Same here, our thoughts and prayers are with him as well, hoping he is still alive. You wouldn't think of this kind of thing happening to AFL players, being amid a disaster, and while it might seem trite to say that "they're regular people, just like the rest of us," you have to bear in mind that places such as south-east Asia and Indonesia are popular tourist and holiday desinations for a lot of Aussies. In fact, one need only recall a couple of years ago when North Melbourne's Jason McCartney was brought home badly burned after being pulled out of a nightclub targeted in the Bali bombing, going in and trying to save his mates. And was worshipped as a hero at the end of it all, too.
Sad. Especialy after what happened the North Melbourne player who was injured in the Bali Bombing. Thoughts and Prayers go out to all victims!
Indeed, especially with the estimated death toll growing seemingly at an exponential rate on a daily basis. Reflecting on the Bali bombing of a couple of years ago, Jason McCartney wasn't the only high-profile AFL footballer to have been involved in that blast. Mick Martyn, his teammate at North Melbourne at the time, also was airlifted into Melbourne airport with burns over a significant portion of his body as well. And Martyn recovered well enough from those injuries in the blast to play another season, at Carlton, before retiring after the 2003 season. These things could happen to anybody-- you, me, or someone in the public eye, just as easily.
Yeah Troy was a hero, and a gentlemen. He saved his wifes life, and therefore become a hero to her, and an even more respected human than before. He has already survived bali, he was there (at bali). Our thoughts are with the Melbourne Footy Club, Family and Friends.
Is he presumed dead already? What's the official word? I think this, along with the Once Caldas former manager (Montoya) shooting in Colombia, and the 2 Brasilian footballers dying on the pitch (one in Brasilian league, another in India) are the most tragic sport stories of 2004. I hope 2005 doesn't bring such sadness in the world of sport.
Troy Broadbridge is still being reported as "missing", at this moment. Players hold out hope -- foxsports.news.com.au
Just heard the sad news on the TV that Troy's been found, unfortunately dead. His family has been reported as identifying his body. http://www.smh.com.au/news/AFL/AFL-...ead-in-Thailand/2005/01/03/1104601299112.html RIP Troy.
That, I'm sure, was inevitable, Andy. But awful nonetheless. I think there were those of us who were holding out a bit of hope for a miracle for Troy, but it was not to be. It's all very sad. We here hope that he went quickly and did not suffer. Condolences to his family, of course, including that of his extended family at the Melbourne Football Club, and prayers of sympathy to his new wife.
