    Rugger Hayden Smith makes good

By Buzz McClain, Special to Universal Sports

Don't you love it when American ruggers do good? In a story that never made it past the Irish Sea, USA Eagle Hayden Smith was named the Aviva Community Player of the Season; Smith, affiliated with the Denver Barbarians, plays professionally for the mighty Saracens in the Premiership league.

(Saracens? Oh no, not that Right Said Fred song again!)

The Australian-born, Denver-raised Smith plays second row for Saracens and in his off time spends considerable effort working with the Aviva "Hitz" coaching program that "is to keep inner city at risk youth from drifting to crime or other anti-social behavior by introducing them to rugby," according to the press release. The work is concentrated in "some of London's most deprived neighborhoods."

"The U.S. Eagle has been involved with the Hitz program since its inception and tirelessly gives of his own time to help make it a success," the release says. "He was nominated for the Community Player of the Season award last year as well.

"Smith was nominated along Roger Wilson (Northampton Saints), Jimmy Gopperth (Newcastle Falcons), Jonathan Pendelbury (Leeds Carnegie), Ben Skirving (Bath)."
