The thing about 150 games is that it might limit the usmnt to solid but unspectacular options. Hiring an ex-player or assistant on the rise (think Henry or Jermaine Jones) likely brings risks and a wider possible range of outcomes, but might have upside.
I do not understand why anyone would make arbitrary requirements, as it limits the choices. And even if you do have preferences, why publicize them? There is something about the whole process I'm finding to be disconcerting, though I'm loath to be explicit with criticism until the manager is named.
Sirius XM FC just interviewed Peter Vermes. He said that US Soccer asked KC to speak to him, and the request was granted. So back in March or April Dan Flynn sat down with him for a very informal meeting. At the end of the meeting he was told by Flynn that once the 2026 World Cup vote was done, a formal meeting would be set up with Peter. Vermes says that he never heard from Flynn again. So there you have it - at least Vermes' version - from his own mouth.
yeah i mean god forbid the new coach lays huge egg and needs to be fired....LoL... as soon as they hire whomever they do...he will already be guaranteed to last throughout the cycle b/c there won't be enough "time" to find a replacement....
Pretty much what we expected. When Vermes signed his KC extension in May, he was asked about the US MNT job, and he replied basically that he'd been in informal contact and that the ball was in the USSF's court, and he said it with enough snark to hint that the USSF had not been playing ball. I think by signing that extension - and also talking about it to the press - Vermes was removed from consideration as "not a team player" long before Earnie even came in. Vermes was one of the candidates for the GM job, after all.
Why is Dan Flynn making sporting decisions? What’s Earnie Stewart’s role if Flynn is the one calling the shots?.. Why is Flynn playing “King Maker”-AGAIN?!* @ussoccer #USMNT *He did it with Bruce Arena as well. #CounterAttackpic.twitter.com/YPJh5Zh430— herculez gomez (@herculezg) October 19, 2018 Absolutely love this from Vermes.
Herculez construes this as Dan Flynn being a kingmaker when it could be looked at oppositely. He wanted Vermes to be interviewed but once Earnie took over he's calling the shots and decided against it. Really none of us know how this arrangement is set up or going to work until some time passes. Anything is just guesswork.
Ultimately Dan Flynn decides, this is not a secret. Earnie does the research, brings the guys to the table and Dan Flynn picks. No different than Gulati was doing. The main point here is that Earnie is not picking the coaches, he does not do the hiring. Flynn could tell Earnie, I don't want any foreigner that doesn't know English, he needs to come from here or there, so yes Flynn could be playing Kingmaker.
Dan Flynn had to sign off on Earnie's position existing... The only guesswork here is your suggestion he's not involved anymore. Anything involving financials is going to hit his desk and with most organizations scrutiny come with the territory when it comes to money.
Why is Dan Flynn so powerful? who put him in place? President, CEO, GM etc....why is it all so convoluted as to who is actually making decisions here????????????? Furthermore, if it has been Dan Flynn the one deciding this all along - and he has been in place since Gulati - doesn't that negate the whole " we need to get a president, a gm, wait for the world cup etc" line of thinking in the delay to hire someone??????? what is Flynn's rationale, then, for delaying a new hire - is it just that they had to give JK so much money to fire him and they already had Sarachen there for this year so it was all about saving a few bucks in the end? and the whole "trust the process" was spin for pinching pennies??????
FYI ESPN is reporting that Tata has a verbal agreement to Manage El Tri after the MLS season ends....
I personally don't think Flynn is all-powerful, but it's not a stretch to say that the GM with the vaguely defined responsibilities who started in August would be unlikely to be able to straight-up veto a decision by the CEO who has held the position for 18 years. Clearly, they're restructuring the division of responsibilities at USSF, but Flynn will not be completely removing himself from the hiring process of leadership positions. Flynn will be seated at the table when the decision is made.
Martino cannot sign with Mexico until his MLS season concludes or pay a penalty, according to his contract with Atlanta United, Is this what is preventing Berhalter from being named USMNT coach as well? If so, MLS' lawyers are certainly putting a wrench into CONCACAF soccer. IS this hardline approach going to attract more coaches in the future to MLS? Couldn't ATL just be "nice" and let Tata sign with MExico now? If so, why arent they? Bitter that he's leaving? if Tata does coach Mexico it will be interesting considering he has had such familiarity with US Soccer and its players....cant be good for the USMNT.
so the heat gulati got shouldve also been directed at Flynn too? why hasn't he really been under fire at all but others have?
in the 58th minute Darke starts with "we've heard that the criteria might be like 150 games coaching in MLS". Twellman says, "Im not sure that is the criteria is 150 games" He also reiterated the requirement of being english speaking. They then show the candidates that fit that criteria.
