I think i read before that more existing property must be acquired and demolished to pull it off. Still parking might be tight. It does appear that SSS at Wonderland would have room for gobs of parking which would be a plus.
Hey gang, don't post that often but being in DC I know a thing or two about stadium angst or lack thereof.... Just took some cursory glances at the story. SO based off the last few posts I guess nothings on the horizon eh? Really feel for you guys.
Either they are giving us lip service and have no intention of leaving Gillette, or they will make an announcement about Somerville or Revere, or they will eventually settle on a SSS in Foxboro. It's one of those three, but the real frustration is the feeling of getting no real info year after year.
I actually think Wonderland is a workable solution, but things have to fall into place. Things that are outside the organization's sphere of control.
Yup. That's my sense. The Revs want Wonderland, but can't do anything until casino licenses are awarded.
I think that will be determined by brown bags filled with twenties, not some artificial legislative benchmark.
The deadline for license application was last Tuesday, and the Commonwealth refused appeals to extend that deadline. As I understand things, the "qualified" applicants will be notified at some point within the next six months that they can move to the next stage, which includes mitigation negotiations with the City of Revere. Ceasar's could get the notification next week, or they could get it in June.
I heard MLS wants their teams to build its own stadiums so they don't have to put up with gridiron lines and conflicts of schedule, etc. Whew..So glad we've got a plan of 12-24 mo....wait!
So wait, if one of the municipalities (which) is awarded a casino.....does that mean that the Revs CAN'T move? I'm confused.
No. We want the casino to be awarded to the Caesar's Group, who will build at the Suffolk Downs site. If that happens, Caesar's then has to develop a mitigation package with the City of Revere, who's mayor has made it known that they'd like the Wonderland site as part of the package. (Caesar's/Suffolk Downs owns the Wonderland property.) If that happens, the City then likely leases the land to the Krafts for some nominal fee, and the Krafts get "free" land on which they build their new stadium.
Let's not kid ourselves. Even if that scenario plays out, the Revs aren't going to build a stadium. This is all smoke n mirrors to pacify the ardent fans who desire a stadium. They will be in Foxboro until they are sold and moved to another market.
If Kraft can get city or state backing on infrastructure improvements, he will build the stadium in Boston and he's almost foolish not to. A second stadium provides him with the additional associated revenue from Revs matches, would give him a better shot at US National Team and European friendlies, and provide him with another outdoor venue to host events. If he gets enough land, he would build a second Patriot Place to go with the stadium and since the Kraft brand in New England is pretty much untouchable (outside of the soccer community), he'd be raking in wads of cash from it. Having that venue and opening it to local soccer events would also bring the soccer community in. The venue would be in a better location and more accessible to locals as well, so hosting BC or BU matches there would a great option and cheaper than opening Gillette for those events. Game-day costs would also go down since they would be operating a much smaller venue.
That's denying the economic reality that SSSs are profitable. If Kraft gets the land and infrastructure for free, he'll build, and he'll make a crap load of money. Revere and Suffolk Down Casino seem desperate enough to make that happen.
I just don't think Kraft cares enough to invest even that much into this franchise, even if it's our opinion that it would be a smart financial decision.
Its the second Patriot Place that he would invest in, regardless of how you feel about his interest in the success of the Revs. Get the infrastructure provided, and he will build there and fill the venue regularly with other events. Moving out the Revs also opens Gillette to more summer concerts and events and opens a second venue for smaller events.
I agree with you. However, he would not really be investing in this franchise as much as he would be making a sound business decision. If he get's a sweetheart deal for the land/infrastructure, he would be foolish not to invest. Obviously, money is what is driving the Krafts involvement in this sport. As of now, the only real way to make a ton of money would be to sell the franchise to an owner to move to another market, which may not be approved by the league. Nobody will buy this franchise and pay to keep it at Gillette, so if he were to get a stadium built, or even just get the deal done and ready to go, he could then open the bidding for the entire project ala NYC2. That said, I think he would develop an entire stadium/retail/hotel/dining/office/entertainment complex and make his money that way. Either way, if Revere offers a sweet deal, Kraft will certainly jump at it. Now I don't know if that will happen because Revere can probably drive some competitive bidding for the property which would likely put the Revs out of contention.
