Yeah, I wouldn’t read much into Lee’s absence just now. He’s in catch up mode, even if he’s been fully embraced back to the fold.
We should keep in mind that Lee might only be in camp to make sure he doesn't give the Revs another option year on him while still maintaining his "trade me or trade me" stance. Kind of like a functional separation even if they're living in the same house. However, why is it "working out" rather than working out? Lee plans on playing professional soccer this season. No reason he wouldn't be keeping himself in shape. I'm confident he's in shape enough to play a preseason game. And how exactly does one prove oneself to Brad Friedel? We already know Lee is a good player. There's no mystery to that. Also, this is preseason. You know, the time of year where you throw different combinations of guys on the field just to see how it goes. That's not being done with Lee. I suspect "prove himself" is a red herring. Lee doesn't want to be there and Friedel's trying to stamp his authority on the team. There's nothing to prove. They're dug in inside opposing trenches. That puts the onus on Burns to move Lee.
Yeh, could be. I think it's very difficult to get in real playing shape without games and/or a real serious conditioning program. I remember that from college - even when I came into camp after doing a ton of running, the first scrimmages would have me gassed. Yeah, that's a good question - it's pretty arbitrary I think. Friedel will have to wait a suitable amount of time before working him back in most likely - but suitable is whatever he decides it is. Agree.
I know some disparage when an agent says Burns is the worst to work with, now you've got GMs attesting to this. A preseason survey of GMs done by Goals.com.
From Brad Freiedel: The #NERevs are "very close" on one signing, "close" on another. Friedel added it's a matter of negotiation now, wouldn't disclose positions or further details. #MLS— Jonathan Sigal (@JonathanSigal) February 28, 2018
I'm not sure I'd want my GM to be a favorite of others to negotiate with, but probably least favorite in this case means more than just "driving a hard bargain".
Yeah, I was going to say something like that. Maybe they don't like dealing with Burns because he's smarter than the average bear, playing 3-D chess when everyone else is playing checkers and 4-5 steps ahead of everyone else! Must be that they just don't want to be left looking foolish, yeah, that's probably it. On a positive note, at least Bye got a vote for possible rookie of the year, and Caldwell got votes for underrated. And a couple of ex-Revs were mentioned as being good coaching material when they hang up the boots. I also never thought of Berhalter as being such a great tactician, but what do I know?
I thought this was an interesting article overall. The things that jumped out at me were the almost unanimous opposition to pro/rel, and the fact that only 14 clubs agreed to participate. I'd be shocked if the Revs participated.
That's the point. Least favorite (and by a large margin) goes along with what some agents have said. That Burns is basically useless. You can be a hard bargainer (see Ainge, Danny) and still be respected as a GM. "Worst to negotiate with" isn't showing much respect.
But disappointing these were the only 2 mentions of the Revolution other than the Burns (which was negative)
