    urugauyan ref killed

    deplorable
It's pretty clear that sports figures and sports in general have moved beyond a past-time diversion or simple idle entertainment & are now idolized or vilified. Uncontrolled passions have moved fans to disrupt many a game in the past, but this is the most disgusting display of hooliganism ever and is a forcast of a rising trend. Less than a week ago 2 idiotic fans wanted to get their 15min of fame so they jumped from the stands onto the diamond and assalted the bucks 3rd base coach. A bucks player said he saw a knife laying on the field. What if...I don't wan't to think about it. Players, coaches, and refs are targets every game and the fanatics seem to lack the respect or temperment to enjoy a match w/o themselves being the focus of attention. Dark days are coming.

The soccer haters will spin this their own way, wanting to blame soccer for the tragedy of a murdered referee.

In reality, poor security must be to blame, and we need look no further than Latin America for that. Really, with what happened last week in Chicago and now this, something is going to have to be done in stadiums to protect those on the field.

This is a tragedy, a black mark that will mar soccer for a while. All this for protesting a red card? C'mon now!

You think they have security in these games? From the looks of it, this was an amateur game in a local league. This leagues exist all over Latin America but when these leagues are located in ridicoulosly poor areas or shanty towns they can turn very violent. These leagues have always been dangerous and this type of thing has happened before, unfortunately. I know that referees of the local leagues in some of the poorest areas have to fight off angry mobs or even run away in the middle of games at times. It's sad, but it happens.

This is in no way representative of all of Latin America or of all the soccer fans. Also, You can't compare this to what might have happened in a Fire game.

    What???? PLEASE DONT GENERALIZE!

Its much easier to KILL a ref in the USA than in the part of Latin America I am familiar with, Brazil. In Brazil access to the field is almost impossible due to fences and in some stadiums moats. In Brazil refs are escorted by Police on and off the field.

Meanwhile in the US all you have to do is be able to withstand a 2 foot drop from the stands and out run some fat security guard and you are within arms length of any ref in Baseball, Soccer, Football or Basketball.

So please, dont use steoreotypes here and look in your own kitchen before putting down other places.

    My mama what?

My mama raised me to not think that a ref deserves to die for a stupid game? Something along those lines? Or was it more along the "Your mama so fat..."?

Joking aside, I know you guys are pissed at the ref for the match the other night but I highly doubt you could justify him being physically attacked. Verbally, sure. And it sounds like the fans took care of that part just fine.

I'm king of the hyperbole on Bigsoccer, but let's not go in this direction. When all is said and done, it is just a game. Ironically, violence is likely to cause more corruption. Normal people wouldn't want to be refs, but instead people with a high degree of toleranace to risk, the type of person who would take a bribe.

    Red, I should of explained,

People were very upset last night with the bad calls going against the Earthquakes, IMO i thought it was a farce, by watching peolpe react like they did towards the Ref last night, I could see how supporters of a Soccer team, who are more passionate than the supporters of the current MlS Champs, the Earthquakes ,get pissed and go after that blind mouse, smell me now?

BEN REILLY; HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLELY MAKE A GENERALZATION ABOUT THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO BECOMES A REF, AND MAKE A JUMP TO A BRIBE TAKER.(AND EVEN THAT DOESN'T JUSTIFY VIOLENCE!!!) I CAN ONLY SPEAK FOR MYSELF,AND OTHER OFFICALS I HAVE SPOKEN WITH AND WE GET INTO THE CENTER CIRCLE BECAUSE WE LOVE THE GAME AND WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO IT, AND ALSO AT THE YOUTH LEVEL HELP TEACH. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BLAME THE VICTIM.IT'S NOT A HIGH DEGREE OF TOLERENCE TO RISK.... BUT JUST A HIGH DEGREE OF TOLERENCE!!!!!!!

I think you misunderstood BenReily's point.

What he said was if we allow violence to go unchecked against refs, then that would lead to good refs deciding that it isn't worth it to put their lives on the line for a match.

That would lead to the type of ref who would take bribes.

He did not say that current refs take bribes, he said just the opposite.

Of course I've already taken something that Ruudboy said on here wrong and called him to task on it without understanding what he meant, so it does happen.

RoHo, if that is Ben;s point, then I stand down from my soap box. This forum is one of the few places ref's can vent. !!!!!

I completely understand. I reffed in the late 80's early 90's and I reget that I didn't keep up with it. Good money, good exercise and the sport I love all rolled into one great job. But when I see how things have gotten these days, I wonder if I still have the mentallity to be a ref.

That is unless they allow you to tell spoiled 17 year olds that they are full of crap these days and back hand slap their parents

Yeah. I thought it was a brewers game. incidentally, the "father" is being charged w/ assault and will probably face several yrs of imprisonment, while his son is going to juvenile detention. His wife led police to believe the assault was premeditated.
