I think our midfield problems is the individual lack of nous (mostly) with the ball rather than positional. Our players tend to take the safe options, passing backwards and sideways and, maddeningly, not providing a give and go option after passing the ball.

Agreed. In both the Man United and Everton matches, we had nobody willing to carry the ball forward. In fact, Joel Matip had more forward runs than all of our midfielders combined. He actually forced the defenders to make a decision and won free kicks in good positions. When Henderson and Wijnaldum are on the ball the defenders can just stay tight on Salah and Mane and the pass ends up going sideways or backwards.

I don’t think Grujic is the solution to this. I’m excited to see him in the mix next season. I have watched him a handful of times at Hertha and been impressed. I have only seen him sit in front of the back four. There is nothing he has done at Hertha to suggest he is the solution to our midfield creativity problem. The article makes it seem like he can replace Coutinho.

We do need that creative player who isn’t afraid to taken on players and, also run beyond the forward line, I agree. We almost got away with it this season, and still may, but it’s obvious why we had gone for Fekir. For reasons unknown, Shaqiri just hasn’t been trusted enough.

The other way we could go is to sign another wide forward with pace. Firmino, Salah, and Mane are all great options through the middle. The problem is that if we play Salah through the middle there is nobody to play out wide. If we sign another top notch forward we could really be deadly with the 4-2-3-1 next season if we start all four of them.
