WHAT?!?!? From Philly and never watched It’s Always Sunny??? Is it because it’s not in German? [emoji6]
So, is this a primary to be followed by a general election between the top 2, or a winner take all? (Never followed this election before.)
Ah, king, eh. Very nice. And how did he get that, eh? By exploiting the workers. By hanging onto outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society.
I think it's because they usually get something really wrong that grates--like the show Angie--so I'm loath to try them. On Angie, they all had East Coast accents--but New York accents, not Philly. I've not watch much of The Goldbergs either, but that's partly because Mrs KG isn't a fan. And I grew up and went to school very close to Jenkintown, where it's set. Rocky was pretty good as was Trading Places. But Stallone had lived in Philly, so he was a lot closer to the right accent.
Lived in Philly for 25 years before moving to Columbus 10 years ago. Went to Radnor H.S., University of Pennsylvania undergraduate and Temple Law School, hence my name on this site. A scene in Trading Places was shot in Rittenhouse Square on a street corner where I used to work. That movie and Rocky really capture both the beauty and grittiness of the city. Also a shout out to the movie Philadelphia especially the opening scenes which also show the diversity and even its warts as they shot City Hall after the Meridian Fire with that gutted building still standing. Also 12 Monkeys although they repurposed buildings to stand for something else like Reading Terminal was used as an airport terminal. I agree Sunny references the city but does not really capture it like the shows you mentioned. Haven’t seen the Goldbergs but I would be interested in seeing any parallels between that family and ours, a Jewish family living on the Main Line.
My husband was born in 1981. Depending on what source you consult, he is either a millennial or not a millennial (and I will refrain from going down this rabbit hole of a topic). He quotes Seinfeld and Philly often. Bigsoccer Crew’s percentage of doctorate holders (specifically JDs) is entirely not reflective of the general public’s percentage.
One of the actors in "Sunny" at least is from Philly. With the Goldbergs, it's set in the 1980's, after I moved to Columbus (the real-life main character was born about the time I left for college). So there's not as much of a connection. Some of the movies M. Night" Shyamalan did have nice Philly references. I know that, in the "Sixth Sense", some scenes were filmed in Manayunk, where my mom grew up, and I recognized them right away. "Invincible" was also pretty good, with one exception--I don't care how cute his GF was, there's no way she would have been in the 700 section at the Vet with Giants gear on. One other good Philly flick, but somewhat obscure, is the movie "The In Crowd" with Donovan's son (the singer not the player). They took a lot of time to get the authentic look and feel of Philly in the early to mid 1960s. The one that got me were the cop cars (one of the character's father was a cop)--I though they were pained wrong--but then remembered that the scheme had changed sometime in the 1960s, and they were quite accurate. That and they used period Reading Railroad passenger cars ("Blueliners" for those who care). They also had a cameo by Sally Starr (children's host in that era) and Peter Boyle (uncredited--playing his dad, who also was a kid's show host) at the (in picture) TV studio where the dance show in the movie was shot.
Really enjoying these lectures from someone who has yet to vote. It’s almost as enjoyable Jill Stein voter from last presidential election polluting the newspaper comment section with unending screeds and references to past elections they had not voted in. It’s a never ending joy. Long may this last.
Ironically, today I got a postcard from Jenkintown, where The Goldbergs is set, from a hobby store there I used to patronize as a college student (the card almost certainly came from a mailing list, so I'm sure they had no idea I was once a customer).
My undergraduate school was a small liberal arts college in Central Pennsylvania. There were 17 guys in my fraternity pledge class. Eleven ended up lawyers, along with two Ph.D. s and a dentist. The other three weren't exactly failures in later life, either. It isn't unusual for there to be concentrations of like people. You might also point out that while the Vietnam War draft was a real thing, going to graduate school was attractive for 22 year old men.
Markus may not win the 2018 Realist or Most Real Fan, but he is certainly a real fan of Meram. Markus never stopped calling Meram his favorite player... This kid will be cheering extra loud on the 11th in the Nordecke for Meram.Welcome home. #SaveTheCrew. pic.twitter.com/YFf9quEQqz— Chelsey Elsey (@ChelseyElsey) August 3, 2018 He asks daily to send Meram messages (tweet at Justin). 99% of the time I “act” like I will eventually do it. I am still a bit uneasy about tweeting at people. However, I figured a very short clip of Markus on Friday would be acceptable.
Wait! I haven’t voted yet! (And I can’t do polls on my phone.) What kind of two-bit election is this anyway?
